10+ Old Hollywood Beauty Tips

There used to be times when there was no contour and highlighters. It’s hard to believe or imagine, but women in the past had to do some pretty bizarre things in the name of beauty.

Here are some interesting, yet downright quirky beauty regimes of Hollywood women from the past.

1
Rita Hayworth used electrolysis to raise her hairline.

Back in the ’40s, it was quite normal for actresses to shave (or use electrolysis) to bring their hairlines roughly one-third of an inch back. Another goal was to have the biggest forehead in the world.

2
Elizabeth Taylor used to shave her face.

It’s so hard to believe that women were supposed to shave their faces back then! Apparently, Elizabeth shaved both for the exfoliating benefits and so that her makeup would apply more evenly.

3
Joan Crawford used to chew a lot of gum to help tighten her jawline.

She believed that working her face muscles would help create a razor-sharp jawline.

4
Judy Garland was on a daily diet of coffee, chicken soup, and 80 cigarettes.

Now, this is a bit bizarre! When 16-year-old Judy took the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, the production studio insisted that she kept going with this gruesome diet.

5
Marlene Dietrich used surgical tape to give herself a facelift.

Marlene, instead of going under the knife, tightened the skin on her face by securing it with surgical tape. She managed to conceal the tape under her hair.

6
Marlene Dietrich also had gold dust sprinkled onto her wigs.

Marlene upgraded her wig with real gold powder. She actually believed it made them look more radiant on film. For those with a lot of money, I suppose it wasn’t that costly.

8
One 1940s beauty ad suggested putting tape on your forehead to stop you from frowning.

You heard right! A literal piece of tape smacked down in the middle of your brows. This actually sounds funny.

9
Joan Crawford splashed her face 25 times with ice water each time she washed it.

Cold water helps to wake up your skin and reduce morning puffiness. But did you really have to do it 25 times, Joan? In the name of beauty…

10
Jean Harlow shaved her eyebrows clean off.

Before Gwen Stefani had pencil-thin eyebrows, old Hollywood gals like Jean were actually rocking them. Jean didn’t pluck them, though. She jumped right to shaving them and drew them on herself.

11
Gloria Grahame stuffed cotton in her upper lip to give herself a bigger pout.

After an on-screen kiss, sometimes Gloria’s male colleagues would end up with wet tissue in their mouths. Not cute at all!

12
Fannie Ward used to hang upside down to slow the ageing process.

According to some sources, the idea was that hanging upside down would increase blood flow. This would, ultimately keep Fannie younger for longer.

13
Audrey Hepburn used to separate each eyelash with a needle.

It was actually her makeup artist, Alberto de Rossi, who would do it for her. That way, she’d get the ultimate fanned-out lashes.

14
Marilyn Monroe used five different shades of lipstick to plump up her pout.

She used darker shades on the outer corners and lighter shades in the center. Very similar to contouring your lips!

15
Marilyn Monroe underwent plastic surgery on her face.

Before her fame, Marilyn decided to go under the knife. Okay, I know you are now depressed.
