Foundation is one of the most deceptively tricky makeup products out there — personally, neither brush nor makeup sponge nor fingers can quite get liquid foundation to not look like I'm wearing a very obvious layer of flesh-colored stuff on my face (which I like to call "second face" or "Face 2.0" if we're talking no-makeup makeup territory). This is why I live and die for a good foundation stick. But they've got to cover a handful of bases, like playing nicely over my skin care products, not settling into fine lines or crevices and have a build-able coverage that I can blend with fingers, should I find myself on-the-go as a serial under-packer.
[post_ads]Well. It seems like Maureen Kelly, the founder of Tarte Cosmetics, and I have that in common. Tarte is releasing its first foundation stick, called the Clay Stick — Amazonian Clay being the secret sauce that sets this one apart from the rest since it gives your skin a little nutritional boost. Kelly mentioned that Tarte fans have been asking for a foundation stick forever and she just had done the run-around of seeing what was out in the market and what she wanted to create. "I had tried a lot of foundation sticks and they'd settle into fine lines or look cake-y,and I didn't want ours to be like that at all," she said, "We made sure that this one has this really nice skin finish that lasts all day but still feels comfortable."
The solid foundation is a 2-in-1 liquid and powder formula which comes in 12 shades from fair to deep. It contains micro-encapsulated powders which burst with your body heat to absorb excess oil (seems aggressive, but then so is my midday oil slick), promising to uphold Tarte's 12-hour power marathon-wear. The coverage is medium-to-full and feels super creamy when applying but sets to a semi-matte satin finish, so it looks like your skin was just magically Photoshopped with all the right lighting.

This editor can attest to its perfection for spot concealing. I'm not a full-coverage kind of girl, but I do like to spot conceal around my eyes and nose to even out redness and dark shadows and this stick definitely pulls weight for both — what's great is that since it's build-able coverage I can layer up for my under-eye shadows which require a bit of extra help as opposed to the slight but perpetual redness around my nose, which can usually make do with a little bit of evening out.
Also, these are great as a quick, no-brainer contour that I can blend in with fingers because I'm lazy and because I'm of the opinion that finger-blending in a creamy foundation like this gives it a a more natural look, since it sinks into skin with the heat of my fingers. It's all about that body heat.

If you trust your contour more to a powder perference, Tarte is also launching Clay Play — a face-shaping palette that contains 12 shades to bring out your inner Bob Ross and sculpt your nose, brows, eyes — literally your entire face — with as much precision as you want.
I don't go full-on contour often, but this palette is one of those invaluable neutrals to have on hand for a does-it-all kit to lightly bronze, fill in brows, or softly define your lashes since it has all matte shades ranging from rosy and buff neutrals as well as deeper browns and blacks. Seriously, it makes my face look like my enhanced Face 2.0 in a snap since I can subtly define my lash lines, brows and cheekbones
The Clay Stick foundation is $39 and the Clay Play Face Sculpting palette is $46; both launch May 21 on Tarte's website. But for Allure readers, for 10% off your purchase — including these newbies — use the code tartexalluremag when checking out.
