Typically, my all-black-everything wardrobe beliefs trickle down to my underwear drawer.
I have dozens of black bras and panties because they truly work under
anything. Black never shows against my chocolate skin. I never have to
worry about colored lace peeking through a sheer shirt (unless I want it
to), or my underwear showing through a pair of linen pants.
But during a visit to Jenette Bras
in L.A., store owner Jenette Goldstein casually mentioned how she
always recommends red T-shirt bras to her large-busted clients. I
totally gave her the side-eye. Everyone knows you wear nude (if you’re
fair skin) or black (if you have dark skin) under a white tee…right? In a
separate conversation with Anna Shnir, specialty sales manager at Panache, she confirmed that the pros are pro-red for invisibility under a white shirt.
Of
course as a skeptical journalist, I had to find out if this hack was
the real deal. So, we gathered a few editors with dark, medium, and
light skin tones to test out red bras under white tees. As you can see
from the photos above, the red bra trick worked on all of them! Yes, all
four of those lovely SELF staffers are wearing red bras under their
white tees to fantastic results. Every woman—myself included—was shocked
at how well the red bra blended in seamlessly.
There
was one test that didn't go quite as well, though. Turns out that when
it comes to hiding them under white shirts, there is a significant
difference between a red bra and a pink bra. The bra below had a
pinkish-purple tint to it, which made it a bit too obvious. To make this
trick work, you'll have to look for a bra that's a true red, or a
deeper one, like burgundy, and stay away from fuchsia or hot pink tones.
Lesson learned.

When done right, red is the new neutral. So, instead of scouring the internet for your perfect nude bra—because
let's be honest, there are more options out there these days, but it's
hard to match your skin exactly—try a bold red bra instead. It'll get
the job done and be your own sexy little secret.
Here are seven crimson bras that pass the T-shirt test.
