Foundation and blush can't do it alone — for that healthy, radiant, just-back-from-the-beach look, you need bronzer. "It's the only product that can give you that healthy, natural glow," explains celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. Look for a shade that's no more than two shades darker than your natural skin tone. "And avoid products with too much shimmer or it gets disco ball–ish," she advises. Then follow her tips for no-fail application.

Step 1: Sweep bronzer around the perimeter of your face.
"I know it sounds nuts to focus on the outside of your face, but it's key to making the color look like the real deal," she says. Start by swirling a blush brush in the bronzer and dusting it on from below each ear to your jaw, then from the top of one temple around to the top of the other. Though bronzers come in a variety of formulas, powders are the easiest to work with.

Step 2: Dust on cheekbones, nose, and chin.
You also want to apply bronzer to places where the sun would naturally hit your face, so brush it lightly on your cheekbones, nose, and chin. Expert tip: Mally says to be sure to tap off any excess color from the brush before you start. (It's a lot easier to layer on more color than to take off excess.)

Step 3: Apply blush to your cheeks.
Swirl a pink-ish blush on the apples of your cheeks. Though it sounds counterintuitive, it's key to making bronzer look natural, as it mimics the sun-kissed effect you'd get if you had actually been at the beach.

Ooh la la! Sun-kissed beauty!
You shouldn't look dramatically darker, or have noticeable contouring — you just want your skin to look warmer, healthier, and prettier.
Tip: For extra credit, add a little highlighter (or use a cream eyeshadow in a pale champagne color) to the tops of your cheekbones.
