Just when you mastered your summer glow and finally started sporting sunshiney yellow makeup, a new season is upon us — meaning it’s time to refresh your routine again. This fall, it’s all about bold looks that rely on moody colors and out-of-the-norm application. Read on to learn how to master the season’s hottest beauty trends.
Add Glitz to Your Eyes
As we ease out of summer, everyday makeup takes on a moodier vibe. In addition to your go-to eye makeup hues like chestnut, slate, and plum — go for the glitz a la Lily Collins. “This fall, I think we’re going to be seeing a lot of sparkling gold eyes,” says celeb makeup artist Mally Roncal. It’s all about balance for this seasonal style, so simplifying your makeup will let your eyes shine through. “It goes great with a nude lip and dewy skin,” the founder of Mally Beauty recommends.Opt for loose glitter like NYX Professional Face and Body Glitter in Gold — just remember to use a shadow primer to lock your glam in place. If you’re after a slightly more muted feel, try a pressed shadow like MAC Dazzleshadow in I Like to Watch.
Sport a Two-Toned Pout
Ombre has had a longstanding love affair with hair, but the two-toned trend has also translated into the world of makeup. “Women are adding more depth and detail to their lips with ombre,” Roncal says. “Personally, I love a nude or dark ombre lip for fall.”After seeing celebs like Jenna Dewan Tatum rock the next-level pout, it’s clear that the key to dominating this look is wearing carefully applied, complementary colors. “I’m seeing neutrals, deep purples, and burgundy shades everywhere this season,” Roncal tells us. For a vampy vibe like Dewan Tatum’s, apply a lighter tone like Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Vintage Capsule Collection in Pallor (lavender) all over the lips, and add a darker shade like Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Plum Role (eggplant) in the center.
Get Graphic with Liner
The cat eye is an OG style staple, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a fresh spin for fall. “The graphic eyeliner trend is super daring, edgy, and much more unique than the classic cat eye,” Roncal says. “Make this one your own!”ZoĂ« Kravitz, for example, loves adding unconventional details to her glam. But that’s not all you’re limited to. “Instead of creating one cat eye per eye, try drawing two parallel wings,” Roncal suggests. “You can also add a dashed line across your top lid to mix things up for fall.” Reach for a liquid eyeliner pen like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner — the marker-style tool makes typically tricky application a breeze.
Bet on Bold Blush
Switch out barely there flushes of color on your cheeks, because bold, bright blush is in. “We’re going to see a lot more women going a little heavier with blush this fall,” says Roncal. “Even if the weather isn’t chilly, they’re going to have that chilled-cheek look.”She predicts that punchy, rosy-red hues — like what Drew Barrymore recently wore — are going to be big for blush this season, but that doesn’t mean you need to ditch your go-to shade. “Just make it a point to add an extra layer of your favorite blush before completing your makeup,” she suggests. Roll a blendable, buildable product like Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush onto the apples of your cheeks.
