With the turn of the calendar brings a fresh start, and what better way to kick off the new year than trying a new hairstyle? As we’ve seen throughout time, hairstyles have undoubtedly inspired cultural movements, influenced identity expression, and defined decades. Just take Cindy Crawford’s classic blowout look from the 90s for example, or an even more vintage look like the beehive updos of the 60s, which evoke memories of Diana Ross and the Supremes swaying across the stage in their glamorous ensembles. So the question remains, what hairstyle will we be seeing in 2022?

Well with the help of two celebrity hairstylists, educator Vernon François and craftsman Nunzio Saviano, we’re here to answer said question. You’ll find that the year 2022 represents an intriguing mix of looks that are bound to spruce up your hairstyle, whether you’re rocking curls, coils, waves, or straight textures. See below for a variety of trendy looks— some with a modern twist and others with an old-school flare, along with the products and tools that will help you to achieve them. And above all, make sure to have fun in the process! “Experiment with what your own head of hair can do and enjoy the surprise if this varies day by day,” says François.

Sleek-Front-Loose-Back

The sleek-back is a look that we've all loved for a while now, and the good news is that it’s not going anywhere. There are many variations of this style, one of which is a “contrasting style where the hair is slicked-back at the front and loose at the back,” says François. If you’d like to try another look in this vein, experiment with a middle part and a top knot— a style that is taking social media by storm at the moment.

The Shag

“The shag— or super layered hair cut— is the trend,” says Saviano.“It works on almost every hair texture and length, and you can even style this look with or without bangs. It gives off a cool, low maintenance vibe, and truly brings out the best of natural hair texture, as the layered cut gives the hair movement.” Saviano also mentions that you can use a diffuser for a last-minute touch-up.

All Natural

“More and more people are finding the courage to explore their gray hair which I am a huge fan of, '' says François. One celebrity who is fiercely rocking her gray roots is Gwyneth Paltrow, pictured here in her natural element. “I also think that the notion of living one’s natural texture— whether kinky, coily, curly, wavy, or straight— will continue for many this year,” François adds. If you’re on the journey of embracing your gray hairs and natural textures, you should keep in mind that using a gentle sulfate-free shampoo is a must.

Soft Brown & Gold

Hues of brown have been taking over lately, which brings us to this fabulous photo of Kelly Rowland showing off a blend of soft brown and gold. We're here to say that this color combination will be floating around all year! Although you could try to achieve this color on your own, we would suggest visiting a stylist, as mixing colors can get tricky!

Bangs

“Fringes are still on the rise, not that they were out, to begin with, but people are re-introducing them and wearing them in different ways ~ like a bottleneck, curtain, and asymmetric bangs,” says François. And Saviano agrees: “Bangs are trendy and in so many different ways, soft, textured, blunt or side-swept, and they’re a great way to update your look while still keeping the length.” If you have textured hair, be sure to use a styling cream or spray, and gently wrap each group of hair strands around your finger to hold the shape in place. And if you have wavy or straight hair, you can use hair spray after blow-drying for a light hold.

The Modern-Day Rachel Cut

Inspired by Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel, from the hit TV show Friends, this cut is an iconic 90s look that celebrates blowdried layers. “The Rachel haircut is definitely making a comeback, “ says Saviano. But this time, with a modern-day twist: “The above shoulder length with longer bouncy layers is an alternative look that it’s quite the opposite of the shag and a different new look from the lob.” Although often hard to master, you can achieve this style by blow-drying sections of layered hair with a barrel brush, and pinning those sections with rollers before letting it all out.

Voluminous Blowout

If you’ve been scrolling through the vast web of TikTok, chances are you’ve come across a blowout hair tutorial, featuring the famed Dyson Air Wrap. To date, there are nearly 983.6M views of TikTok videos using the hashtag #dysonairwrap. However, one thing that's not getting as much attention is using a heat protectants before you blow-dry your hair. “Protect your hair first with a product like Redken’s One United, which is a multi-benefit leave-in hair treatment,” says François.

Short Cut

“People are cutting their hair shorter than ever before, which can feel liberating and can even add a boost of confidence,” says François “A dramatic new crop can mark a fresh start as well as being a clean slate for hair health. Also on the topic of dramatically short haircuts, I think we will be seeing more of, TWAs or teeny-weeny afros, pixie haircuts, and even buzz cuts.”

Beach Waves

The name of this look makes us want to jump right into summer! Although we’re not quite there yet, we do have something to look forward to, and that is experimenting with making waves. In order to create this classic style, you’ll want a hair wand that creates long-lasting waves for days.
