Next, use a shower cap to cover your coconut oiled hair. In a pinch I've used saran wrap or a plastic grocery bag. You'll want to be sure to cover your hair well with the coconut oil applied as it can get really drippy as the heat from your body melts the oil.
I like to wrap a towel around the shower cap. It helps keep the heat from your head trapped around your hair, which helps open your cuticle and allows the coconut oil to penetrate your hair shaft.
Pro tip: use a warm towel just out of the drier, or heat your hair with a hair dryer (not too hot, so you don't melt your shower cap) before applying your towel for extra deep conditioning.
Let the treatment sit on your hair for 15 to 60 minutes. The duration is really up to you. The drier or more damaged your hair is, the longer you'll want the coconut oil to sit on your hair.
Some people like to sleep in a coconut oil treatment. To sleep in coconut oil, apply the oil in the same fashion, just be sure to put a towel over your pillow before you go to sleep. You can sleep in a shower cap, or not. I can't stand sleeping in a shower cap, so when I choose to go this route, I simply apply the coconut oil and let it dry into my hair before going to bed.
