Top 10 Haircuts and Colors Right Now

By Marianne Mychaskiw, Instyle

Did you procrastinate on the whole "new year, new hair" movement back in January? Great news—we did, too. Luckily, the past few awards show-filled months have offered up no shortage of inspiration ripe for your next salon visit. From Emma Roberts's vibrant auburn, to Michelle Obama's blunt lob, scroll down to see the 10 hottest haircut and color looks we're loving right now.

The New Shag
A far cry from the '90s-era "Rachel" cut, the 2017 shag hits at the collarbone and gives a slight nod the the '70s. "Once your lob gets too long, you can layer it into a shag, and it's the perfect length," says Gregory Russell, who created Chloe Moretz's look.

The Blunt Lob
[post_ads]Keeping the ends at a uniform level gives a cut like Michelle Obama's a classic, polished finish. "What's great about the blunt cut is that it can be worn sleek, but also with beach waves or a deconstructed texture," says Tyler Colton, hairstylist for Honey Artists. "If you have an oval-shaped face, definitely go longer between the jaw and collarbone. Long faces should take the blunt cut closer to the jawline."

The Side-Swept Pixie
By keeping the layers longer in the front, short crops like Viola Davis's serve up endless styling possibilities, from effortless and side-parted to swept back in a sky-high pompadour.

Bronze Ombre
[post_ads]Gone are the days of contrasting platinum on brunette color schemes. By giving your highlights a metallic bronzed finish, a la Chrissy Teigen, the overall effect is more subtle, and your skin gets an extra touch of warmth. "It's the kind of hair color that will make your girlfriends ask where you went on vacation over the weekend," says colorist Lila Carlino of New York City's Julien Farel Salon. "Think of a rich base with ribbons of caramel, to light golden-blonde at the very ends."

Rich Auburn
Not too cool, not too warm, a neutral auburn base like Emma Roberts's is just right for all skin tones. Because the shade is so vibrant, we recommend using a color-depositing conditioner every time you lather up. Red is the largest hair color molecule, and is prone to fading faster than other shades, but can stay fresh til your next appointment with the right after care.

The Tousled Lob
Truth be told, the long bob has been a popular look for what seems like eons. For a low-key finish, opt for staggered layers like Olivia Munn's, which look equally great either styled or air-dried.

Caramel Brunette
The change is subtle, but it's there. By fine-tuning Kerry Washington's natural brunette a touch toward sienna, her hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew was able to play up the golden hints in her skin.

Rose Gold
In the creative color realm, rose gold is still going strong. Instead of a pastel pink on a blonde base, true rose gold tones like Lady Gaga's incorporate warm copper hints into the mix—you know, like every piece currently in your jewelry box.

Layered Bangs
A wispy set like Emilia Clarke's are super-versatile and look great against any face shape, but create a balancing act in particular for long and heart silhouettes. Ask for a length that just hits the brow area, so you can either wear them to the front, or swept to the side.

Platinum Blonde
That blonde ambition is stronger than ever this year, with even typically-brunette stars like Katy Perry crossing over to the lighter end of the spectrum. Make sure your hair colorist picks a hue that flatters your complexion—cool skin pairs well with Perry's icy shade, whereas warmer tones should opt for a slight honey tint.
