When the weather turns cold, we haul out the sweaters and coats and put away the shorts. We make over our skin-care routine; hell, we even change our cocktail of choice. So why not try a new hair color next time you go in for a touch-up? T

Let's be honest, we could devote an entire Pinterest board to our love of Gigi Hadid, but the first pinned photo would definitely be a shot of her warm, golden blonde hair. And while sun-kissed highlights may be a hallmark of summer, they work even harder for you in winter. "Gold warms everything up," says Meri Kate O'Connor, a colorist at Eva Scrivo salon in New York City. "It helps counteract the cold everyone is feeling."

When we talk hair-color inspiration, it usually includes countless variations of highlights, lowlights, and balayage, but there's something smart about Kendall Jenner's rich, dark color: That solid hue tends to reflect a lot of light, which means instantly shiny hair in the dead of winter. "Depending on your skin tone, you can go warmer or cooler, but I suggest trying an espresso shade to start," says O'Connor.

When Jennifer Lawrence appeared with a platinum bob, we got the sudden urge to book a double process—and not just because we'd copy anything J-Law does. "That ski-bunny blonde rules in the winter," says Lorri Goddard of the Goddard + Bragg salon in Los Angeles, who has worked with Reese Witherspoon. Make no mistake, this color is as high maintenance as they come, but it's an unquestionably glamorous way to beat the winter blues.

Our obsession with mink began with coats (faux, of course), moved to eye shadow, and landed most recently on false eyelashes. But model Jasmine Tookes's interpretation of this subtle, multifaceted color is the next step. Her deep brunette is enhanced with auburn highlights that capture the light. This color combination gives hair dimension (which equals fullness) and an unexpected warmth. "Brunettes with soft, rich, swirled texture are really sultry," says Goddard.

This color may not be found in nature, but it's remarkably wearable. The seductive shade works well on a surprising number of skin tones. And you don't have to go all in—it works as a lowlight as well. "Whether the warmth is in fine glimmers or it's an allover color, like Rihanna's, this rich hue is having a defining moment this season," says Goddard.

Emma Stone's red hair is the pumpkin-spice latte of colors and the quintessential winter color. Its warmth brings out all the warmth in your face, like an instant pick-me-up for sallow or pale skin. "It's about striking the perfect balance between golden copper and a rich, bronzed brown," says Kyle White, lead colorist at the Oscar Blandi salon in New York City. It's also superpretty against a white sweater. Or, you know, snow.

Add this to your long list of beauty lingo: "sombré," or soft ombré. It's a much more approachable, natural-looking take on the gradient trend. Jamie Chung's dark roots blend seamlessly into her lighter ends with zero harsh lines. "Sombré works so well during the winter because you get an illuminating effect around the face," says White. "But it doesn't wash out your skin because of the darkness at the roots."

Yet another hair-color portmanteau, the not-quite-brown, not-quite-blonde shade known as bronde—and demonstrated ably by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley—should be on your radar during the colder months. "It works well all year round, but it stands out particularly well on dark hair in the wintertime," says Johnny Ramirez, colorist and co-owner of the Ramirez Tran salon in Beverly Hills. Bronde will also add a ton of dimension to your hair, "tricking the eye into seeing depth and creating the illusion of fullness," explains White.
