Forget everything you ever knew about pearls. The classic,
sometimes dowdy precious stone is making a high-fashion comeback at this
year's Costume Institute Gala à la Brie Larson, and we're so here for it.
For the 2017 Met Gala,
Larson stunned on the red carpet with a twinkly eyeshadow look with a
fierce feline flick, adorned with faux pearls, courtesy of makeup artist
Rachel Goodwin. "We were all really inspired by Japanese culture, and
we wanted to do something avant-garde," Goodwin tells Allure. "The Met Gala is an inspired night — we wanted to bring some fun elements, obviously for Comme des Garçons."

is why Goodwin opted for a soot-colored gray eye with an unexpected
twist — a trio of tiny pearl accessories lining the end of a cat-eye,
which she dug out from the bottom of her kit at the very last minute. "I
got the pearls at Michael's about two years ago," Goodwin tells Allure. "I have so many things from my kit that I just have, and then they come out when you least expect it."

Here's how she got the look: To start, Goodwin blended the light gray shade from the NARS Portobello Duo Eyeshadow palette into Larson's lids using the NARS #42 Blending Eyeshadow Brush, and then from there, she added extra depth with the chocolate-hued NARS Fez Shimmer Eyeshadow, using NARS #44 Precision Contour Brush.
"It's
a gunmetal, a really dark gray, not a soft gray," says Goodwin. "With
red carpet, it's really tricky because you want to push boundaries, but
things still need to stay beautiful. There's a line you can cross —
what's interesting, what's fun, and what's exciting — so I'm always
looking to strike that balance, something that's rooted in reality and
has the fantasy element."
For the cat-eye element, the makeup pro applied a tight line using the NARS Iskandar Eye Paint along top lash lines using the NARS #47 Angled Eyeliner Brush, and then created a thinner line with the gray-hued NARS Eyeliner Stylo in Koala
along the lash line "to open the eyes." From there, the pearls were
added to the end of the wings, as well as the inner corner of the eyes.

After curling the lashes, Goodwin applied a few coats of Chanel Le Volume Mascara in Noir to Larson's lashes for a mega voluminous look. As a finishing touch, the star's hairstylist Mara Roszak adorned gold leaves into Larson's slicked-back, low-slung updo. Luxe look, indeed.
