The actress hit the Met Gala 2017 red carpet wearing the most epic multi-colored eyeshadow look we've ever seen (yes, even more show-stopping than her disco-ball eye look from the 2014 MTV Movie Awards). And since we're still gawking over the statement-making look, her makeup artist Nick Barose gave us all the scoop on the gorgeous makeup.

Inspired by the spring florals in Nyong'o's Prada design for the evening, Barose knew he wanted to emphasize the bold hues without being too "precious" or cutesy. "Lupita is fun to work with and open to ideas, so it makes me try even harder to do something different," Barose tells Allure. "I love the idea of bold colors and spaces in spontaneous strokes to create the kind of impressionistic flowers on the eyes. I recalled those iconic images of Twiggy with flowers painted on her eyes, but I wanted to keep it more abstract."

"We're not married to pre-conceptual ideas — there's a loose inspiration and color scheme," he says. "The real 'magic' is usually that last ten minutes before she walks out, and we see how it comes together." He adds: "The champagne does help!" Magic.
The only real word to describe Nyong'o's eyeshadow look. Here's how Barose did it: To create a base for the multi-dimensional look, Barose applied an eyeshadow primer (Aquatique Waterproof Eyecolour Base) in a shade a lighter than the actress' skin (in order for "the color of the eyeshadow to show through"). "Even though I wanted the color to look slightly messy — in a good way — I want to make sure it stays in place and doesn't smudge on its own and get messier," he tells Allure. "Artfully messy — not sloppy is the key." Artfully messy indeed — with a mix of bright, vivid colors in shades, including pink, purple, blue, orange, and yellow, etched perfectly in subtle squares on her eyelids.
