What is it about fashion that brings out our adventurous,
occasionally delusional side? Most of us don’t have access to personal
stylists, an unlimited budget, and endless options, so when it comes to
fashion we have to get a little creative. And if the style we’re trying
to pull off is a little impractical in the first place? Well, that’s
never gotten in our way before! It’s amazing what some of the crazy
things these ladies have done in the name of fashion.

1. Junior geniuses
“In junior high, my friend and I would sleep in our jeans with
leggings under them to stretch them out so they wouldn’t be too tight at
school the next day. #whatwasithinking” – Shannon (via Joy In The Works)
2. Then it asked me for a massage
“I shrunk my favorite sweater dress, and soaked it in hair conditioner to ‘relax the fibers.’” – Babble Editors
3. Pretty (modest) Woman
“I iron a dress every time it comes out of the dryer – to make it longer – so I don’t look like a sex worker.” – Elizabeth (via Manic Pixie Dream Mama)
4. Breathing optional
“I was a bridesmaid for my sister last summer. When she told me I
could choose between the strapless, or one- or two-shouldered version of
the dress, I snorted. I bought the two-shouldered dress and then went
about finding a support system that would do the job. None of this
spandex-lightly-shaping business. I went full-on 19th century girdle. I
wore comfy shoes for the wedding. I figured I’d suffered enough.” –

5. Detective work
“My mom complimented me on a jacket. So for Mother’s Day, I had to
buy it for her. Of course I no longer had the tag. Or receipt. Or style
number. I called 10 stores, each about three times. After weeks of
research (and everyone recognizing my voice) I finally found the style
number. But, they were out of stock. #fail.” – Babble Editors

“One time I bought these trendy crocheted pumps, (they were a
thing!). They didn’t have my size so I went a size bigger. They were so
huge on my feet, they would fall off if I walked too fast. So I used one
of my grandmother’s tricks. I stuffed a bunch of wadded-up Kleenex into
the toes to compensate for the extra space. Worked like a charm!” –
Crystal P.
7. Eddie never looked so good
“When I would go out on weekends I often did a quick-change at my
BFF’s house and squeezed my 5’6″ self into her jeans. She happened to be
4’11”! The process required me laying on her bed and her straddled over
me with a wire hanger bent through the zipper to pull it up. When I
finally got up I looked like something out of an Eddie Murphy skit.
Somehow THAT made me feel happy and fashionable!“ Colleen (via Souffle Bombay)
8. Doubles as an arm workout
“My favorite jumpsuit shrinks in the wash, so every time I wash it,
my husband and I take an arm and a leg and pull.” – Babble Editors
9. Making it work
“My husband bought me a cute flannel dress that is beyond flattering,
so it’s my go-to outfit when I’m feeling less than attractive. But he
got it super cheap from a store not known for high-quality clothes, so
the zipper gets stuck all the time. Taking it off requires someone else
to pull and maneuver it over my head. #noregrets” – Ambrosia B.

10. Do they have a drive-thru?
“I purposely have my husband take me to restaurants with a short
distance from their front door to the street so I can wear my highest
heels.” – Kate (via Love and Knuckles)
11. Multi-purposing
“I’ve used my hair straightener to flatten wrinkles in clothes I’m
wearing when I’m too lazy to get out the ironing board and iron – or to
take off my wrinkly clothes.” – Bailey (via Your Serene Life)
12. Joint garment custody
“My best friend and I were getting married two weeks apart, so of
course went wedding dress shopping together, and of course fell in love
with the same beautiful and fairly expensive dress. Our crazy solution?
We shared the dress! I wore it first, and then while I was on my
honeymoon, her mom painstakingly removed dirt from the lace with a
toothbrush, a few alterations were made, and then it had its second day
in the sun.” – Babble Editors
