8 Haircut and Hairstyle Trends to Try in 2018

If you declared 2018 the year of nonstop slayage, you would be correct. And when it comes to hair, it looks like the fierceness won't be letting up anytime soon. We're just a month into the year and already we're seeing the hair trends that will define 2018 — just ask some of our favorite hairstylists, who spilled the tea on which looks they're loving. Retro Realness

We may be looking forward to the rest of 2018, but when it comes to hair, we're getting inspired by decades past. “I think we’ll see a mix of ’70s- and ’90s-inspired looks," says hairstylist Ursula Stephen. "Healthy, fluffy hair is in right now. Zendaya and I have been playing around with roller sets, which is a timeless way to achieve this look. We set it, let it sit, brush it out, and let it do what it does — no heat required.”

Messing Around

Leave the angular styles in 2017 and try out something a little more curvaceous this year. "Rounded-under styles (à la Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface)," are the wave, according to hairstylist Marcus Francis. Take cues from Margot Robbie, who rocked the look like a pro on the red carpet.

The Long Pixie

Francis is also really feeling "longer pixies," which makes a lot of sense since so many women in Hollywood made the big chop last year and are starting to grow them out (case in point: Kristen Stewart).

All Lined Up

Buzz cuts are still having a big moment, and folks are looking for all kinds of ways to spice up their crops. Hairstylist Gabrielle Corney says we'll be seeing a lot of "haircuts with lines etched in them — taking undercuts to a whole new level. I would love to see this on women of all ethnicities and ages and even add color to it." Lupita Nyong'o and Marija Abney (pictured) have already embraced the look.

That Bob Life

"The bob is here to stay — it’s a classic, always has been, always will be. And it's versatile, you can wear it straight, curly, or wavy,” Corney says. Francis concurs, saying he loves "shagged-out bobs like Alison Brie and bobs with bangs like Sofia Boutella (pictured)."

Structured Updos

We've already been seeing a lot of great updos on the red carpet (like this one on Lupita Nyong'o) and Francis says we should expect to see more. "Sleek and structured updos are beautiful ways of showing off a woman’s features and a dress while giving an artful approach to her hair."

What Haircut?

Teddi Cranford, founder and creative director of White Rose Collective is seeing a lot of “the no-haircut haircut. A lot of my clients don’t want to look like they just got a super clean, fresh cut — just soft, healthy ends." Kind of like Jenna Dewan Tatum's lob seen here.

Celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms is still in love with the pixie."Right now, I’m into going as low as your facial structure will allow," she tells us. "Whether it’s a super short pixie or a shaggier pixie. Letting it go. Cutting it off. Being free and starting fresh." We can get behind that.
