6 Spring Eyeshadow Looks You'll Actually Want to Wear

By Erin Lukas, Instyle

Like my Uniqlo Heattech leggings, I tend to shed the layers of eye makeup I’ve been wearing all winter once the first day of spring rolls around.

Spring makeup and dramatic, smoky eyes don't go exactly hand in hand. But you don't have to give up eyeshadow just because winter is up—you just need to adapt the colors you use to the new season. Sheer eyeshadow might be the gold standard of spring eye makeup, but if the red carpet is any indication, this year you're going to want to wear brights.

Kim Kardashian's cobalt smoky eye and Yara Shahidi's pop of metallic yellow eyeshadow are two examples of spring 2018 eyeshadow trends that are easily wearable and just as dramatic as the liquid liner you wore all winter.

Keep scrolling for six looks that you'll actually want to wear this spring.

We hope you aren't sick of glitter yet because spring 2018 is going to be another season full of all things sparkly. A more grown-up approach to wearing glitter eye makeup is Margot Robbie's subtle silver eyeshadow from this year's SAG Awards. Try Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow in Silver Screen (macys.com) for a similar finish. The creamy, satin-finish taupe shadow is infused with tiny silver flecks of glitter.

Highlighting the inner-corners of your eyes with a shimmery eyeshadow can help you look more awake—even when you're not. Instead of sticking with neutral champagne or taupe shades, this trend is a way to finally put the bright colors in your eyeshadow palettes to use. For a pop of yellow, like Yara Shahidi wore, dust Fenty Beauty's Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife (sephora.com) onto the inner corners of your eyes.

Green eyeshadow may look intimidating, but a pastel shade is surprisingly easy to wear. If you don't want to get too crazy with a color that's outside of your usual eyeshadow library, swap your charcoal smoky eye for a seafoam green one like Jenna Dewan Tatum. Sweep NARS Shimmer Eyeshadow in Malacca (narscosmetics.com) all over your eyelid and along your lower lash line for the base of your smoky eye.

Nicole Richie's Rose Gold Eyeshadow

The wrong pink eyeshadow shade can easily veer into conjunctivitis territory. Ew. But, rose gold is a universally flattering, easy alternative to wearing fuchsia on your lids. Since Nicole Richie's metallic eyeshadow isn't too far off of the coppers or bronzes you would normally wear, apply it the same way. Sweep Urban Decay's Eyeshadow in Scratch (sephora.com) across your lids for a soft, shimmery finish.

Call it the Pantone effect, but purple eyeshadow is having a moment—and it's surprisingly easy to wear. Charlize Theron's violet eye makeup demonstrates that your look doesn't have to be complicated to stand out. She simply applied a sparkly purple eyeshadow like Dior Diorshow Mono Eyeshadow in Powder (dior.com) from her lash line up to her crease and slightly fanned it out before hitting the red carpet.

If you think that blue eyeshadow should stay in your favorite '80s John Hughes movie, Kim Kardashian will convince you otherwise. The star wore a vibrant blue smoky eye from her upcoming KKW Beauty collaboration with her longtime makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic. Kardashian's subtle contour and nude lip helped modernize the color.
