9 Celeb Hairstyles That Are Better Because of Bangs

But, luckily, these celebs are proving that a bit of fringe is almost always a good idea, even if it’s just for a night or two with clip-ins

To bang, or not to bang, that is the perpetual question. Short, long, blunt, side-swept, or choppy… the list of fringe possibilities goes on and on. Depending on your hair type, length, and look, trying to find the right way to add bangs can be tricky. But, luckily, these celebs are proving that a bit of fringe is almost always a good idea, even if it’s just for a night or two with clip-ins. Scroll through for a little A-list bang-spiration and tips from the pros to get their styles.

Think you can’t pull off Watson’s pixie bangs? Think again — the key to owning this look is all about having a fashion-forward attitude, according to Temur, lead stylist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger Salon. “Emma Watson’s bangs are very editorial, which play up her gentle features, but the best part about this hairstyle is that it’s easy to manage and the upkeep is minimal,” he says. “Just a bit of Sally Hershberger 24K Superiority Complex Texturizing Paste ($40) is all you need.”

“Sofia Vergara’s center-part bangs allow for so much play and can really match any shape, but people with a rounder face can wear these bangs well,” says Temur. To get her look, he suggests applying a drop of styling cream to the bangs and blow-drying them first, before the rest of your hair in order to create the base for the style you want. Then simply finish off with a texture spray.

Who says curly girls can’t rock bangs? Not Shahidi’s stylist Kendall Dorsey, that’s for sure. “Whenever we give her a top knot, it looks way better with her curly bangs because they frame her face and make for a look that’s stunning on all curly textured girls,” he says. “Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie ($14) will also keep them frizz free.”

By now we know that Zendaya can rock just about any hairstyle, but one of our favorites on her? Her Met Gala 2018 ‘do. To achieve the wavy chopped bob with severe bangs, Unilever celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen sprayed Bumble and bumble. Surf Spray all over for piecey texture, then scrunched Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse throughout for added shine to encourage a wet look.

If you have naturally wavy hair, Cutler stylist Ryan Austin Kazmarek suggests trying out clip-in bangs if you can’t fully commit to the idea. “Georgia Fowler wears her bangs pretty wavy because of the cowlicks in her hairline, so to style bangs like these I like to start off with a styling cream or pomade like Ouai Finishing Crème ($24) and Fatboy Sea Salt Pomade ($21) and diffuse the bangs as I pull down on them to create a looser wave,” he explains.

“The right bangs can bring symmetry and balance to your face, attention to your eyes, and even take off a few years,” according to celeb stylist Jessica Hoffman Shakir. And you can’t help but admit they seriously glam up a red-carpet-ready style. Ratajkowski’s wispy medium bangs work great for her oval face shape. To recreate her look at home, Hoffman Shakir advises blow-drying your bangs with a round brush, like the Nume Ionic Round Brush ($25), which changes color to let you know when your hair is dry so you softly bend your fringe how you want it. You’ll also need a hairspray that isn’t heavy to keep them in place.

Bobs and bangs go hand in hand, just peep Washington’s modern power broker bangs for proof. “A textured bob with textured bangs is beyond cool and whether you pair your bob with blunt or side-swept bangs that blend into your haircut (which are great for heart-shaped faces), both styles give the illusion of thick and full hair,” says Hoffman Shakir. “I use the Nume Technique Slim Hair Straightener ($129) to perfect this look because the pure tourmaline ceramic floating plates help protect your hair from the heat, smooth the follicles, and eliminate any tugging to ensure each pass is smooth.”

Johnson may have some of the best hair in Tinseltown, but that’s partially due to her famous, face-framing bangs that she’s been rocking for a while now. “Dakota’s fringe is more of an easy, soft look and you can style them in many different ways,” says Butterfly Studio Salon founder Kattia Solano. Because she has medium-to-fine hair, Johnson can wear them pushed over to the side or fuller in her face, but Solano’s #1 tip for styling bangs is to not load them up with a lot of product. “Honestly, I never apply products to bangs because they tend to get naturally oily from the skin and it’s best to keep them clean,” she adds. The one exception to the rule would be a light hairspray like Oribe Free Styler Working Hair Spray ($42) to give a little hold and shape.

Solano is also loving Argañaraz’s coiled fringe, because “her bangs are strong and make a statement in a very sexy and flirty way,” she says. As for how often you need to trim your fringe, Solano recommends every four weeks unless you’re into that whole hair covering your eyes vibe.
