We’re so into our skin-care and makeup routine, sometimes we forget to take care of our crowning glory. Which--during the active summer season of hillside hikes, beach going and pool swimming--means we’re risking serious hair damage, from breakage to ruined expensive color.

RINSE FIRST
Before you get into a pool, wet your hair so that your cuticles can soak up non-chlorinated water instead of the harsh, chemically-treated pool water.
BYE-BYE, BUN
[post_ads]Don’t pull fragile wet hair into a tight ponytail or bun or you’ll risk breakage. Just go through it with a wide-toothed comb and loosely braid it or let it flow free.
FIGHT FRIZZ
Porous, color-treated hair can get especially dried out after sun and salt-water exposure. Protect it by applying a leave-in conditioner to wet hair. If you have fine locks, brush in Miracle Leave-In Lite ($36); if your hair is thicker or has a tendency to frizz, opt for Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Conditioner ($29).
HAIR NEEDS SPF, TOO
UV filters are the ?80s styling mousse of hair care today. Run a handful of SachaJuan Hair in the Sun balm ($32) through short hair before you go out in the sun (it doubles as a styling gel). Or for an SPF that?ll make your hair glossy and citrus scented, mist Frederic Fekkai Pre-Soleil Hair Mist ($20) generously through your hair.
BANISH BRASSINESS
[post_ads]Notice your brown hair turning brassy? Mix a tablespoon of Joico Color-Balance Blue Shampoo ($16) into your usual shampoo to tone down the warmth without getting too ashy. For blondes who notice a greenish tinge (thanks, chlorine), mix a tablespoon of baking soda into shampoo.
PROTECT YOUR SCALP
The combination of dry, air-conditioned air and environmental stresses makes for an irritated scalp. Rub protein- and essential oil-rich Cake Anti-aging Growth Serum ($72) into your scalp before drying to soothe the delicate skin and stimulate hair growth.
MASK THE PROBLEM
After a day in the water and sun, reintroduce moisture into the hair shaft with a post-washing mask. Apply coconut oil or Davines’ Minu Hair Mask ($32) to hair, then cover your head in plastic wrap or a shower cap for 15 minutes. After you rinse, your locks will feel super-soft.

FAKE SURFER HAIR
It’s counterintuitive, but the best way to get sexy, beachy waves is to steer clear of the sand and instead use a surf-and-sand spray such as the shine-inducing Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($39) or the thickening and texturizing R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray ($25).
EMBRACE THE CRUSHABLE HAT
Protect hair and skin with a stylish wide-brim hat that can be rolled up and stashed inside your carryall. The Lola First Aid ($215) is made of basket-woven raffia, and its ribbon can be tied to fit your head perfectly (watch the video).
