25 Foolproof Summer Hairstyles to Try When It's Boiling Outside

Don't spend the next few months battling the humidity!

By Jennifer Tzeses, Woman's Day

You want to be out enjoying summer — not worrying about your hair. These easy summer styles your favorite celebrities have worn (from an updated shag to a bun with a twist) take advantage of your hair's natural texture, so you can beat the heat without breaking a sweat.

01

Carefree Waves

Nashville native Reese Witherspoon knows it’s no use trying to battle summer humidity. Instead of an every-hair-in-place look, she goes with the flow with a layered cut that takes advantage of her natural wave. To avoid the frizzies, apply an anti-frizz product like Moroccanoil Treatment Light, then blow-dry using a round brush.

02

Slicked-back Crown

Sick of ponies, but still want a sleek look? Tiffany Hadish has the best of both worlds with this style that's slicked back on the top of her head, but with the ends hanging loose. Start by using a flat iron to straighten dry hair. (Use a heat protectant to protect hair.) Then take a small amount of pomade, rub it together between palms and apply evenly to hair, smoothing it down as you go. Let air dry to set.

03

The Braided Bun

Give a basic bun an upgrade by braiding hair before putting it up. To get Camila Alves' look, part hair in the middle, then braid each side down to the nape of the neck (braid pieces under, not over, each other for a tidier look). Then wrap both braids into a bun and pin in place.

04

The Updated Shag

This isn’t Carol Brady’s shag! Anna Faris’ style has a deep side part and fewer choppy layers for a fresh, modern look. Start by asking your stylist for a layered cut that works with your hair’s natural texture. To style, apply a frizz-fighting mousse, comb it through hair, and then let air-dry.

05

The Wet Look

When it's 98 percent humidity, the easiest way to keep short hair in place is to just slick it back with an old-school pomade. To get Ruby Rose’s sleek look, apply pomade from roots to end, then use your fingers to “sculpt” hair into the style you want. Let it dry without touching.

06

Retro Ringlets

When temperatures soar, forget trying to coax naturally wavy or curly hair into a sleek blowout. Instead, take a cue from Amanda Seyfried and take advantage of your natural texture. If your hair already has some curl, you're one step ahead of this 'do, says celebrity stylist Sean Jahanbigloo of Juan Juan Salon in Beverly Hills. If not, spritz a sea salt spray onto dry hair, then tightly twist into 1-inch sections to form waves around your whole head. Defuse dry and run your fingers through the twists to rough them up a bit. (A tiara is optional.)

07

Faux Pixie Cut

If you have short hair but want an even shorter hairstyle, don't think you have to make a trip to the salon. Fake a pixie cut by swooping your hair to one side, and use product to get that extra-sleek look. Pin up the remaining portion of your hair.

08

Half-Up Top Knot with Straight Hair

This style works well if you're having a great hair day, but still want your hair out of your face. Spilt your hair into two sections at the crown of your head. Twist the top section of your hair into a bun, and style the rest of your hair that's down

09

Sleek Bun

Using product to help slick your hair back, part your hair in the middle, and twist into a low bun for a ballerina-inspired look.

10

Faux Bob

No scissors are required for Cate Blanchett's elegant hairdo! To create this look, "part your hair into three sections, one on your right, one on your left, and a back section," explain stylists Anna Dunn and Clint Mattoni of the Benjamin salon in West Hollywood, CA. "Softly back comb hair about ear down to use as padding and keep hair from parting. Put back section into a loose, low ponytail. Drag the elastic a couple of inches downward then wrap the rest of the ponytail up and pin resting on the nape. Gently pull pieces to help create the shape you like. Working visually, take front sections and pin into the back section to mimic the sides of a bob shape. Pull out any shorter layers around face for a softer look."

11

Cinched Ponytail

Olivia Wilde's hairstyle, with its funky flair, makes any outfit a head-turner. To begin this creative do, put your hair in a high ponytail, and apply a a bit of hairspray all over to keep the style intact. "Take elastics (the finer the hair, the smaller the elastic) and place as desired," says Dunn. "For smaller rounds, place the elastics closer together. For larger, further apart." Keep going until you get to the end of the ponytail; to create the round shape, softly pull out edges of each hair section between the bands.

12

Sleek Top Knot

To get Nicole Kidman's slick look, twist your hair into a tight, small bun, and secure with a clear rubber band. This style is a great choice if you haven't had a chance to wash your hair, but if your hair is freshly shampooed, use a gel to insure hair stays in place.

13

Messy Updo

For this look, pin up your hair but leave several strands down so that you get that messy, causal vibe.

14

Headband Hairdo

Add some glimmer to your favorite hairstyle. You can go glam with a headband like Nicole Richie's or casual with a simpler piece. It's also a great way to keep those sweaty bangs off your face.

15

Fishtail Braid

Give your braid a new twist and with this style Blake Lively sports with ease. To create this 'do, divide a ponytail into two sections. "From this point, you will subsection the outside sections as you work," instruct Dunn and Mattoni. "Take outer subsection and cross it over to the middle. Then do this on the opposite side, overlapping the first subsection in the center." Keep going until you run out of hair, then secure the look with an elastic.

16

Retro Ponytail

Because they keep your tresses off your neck, ponytails are the go-to style for hot, sticky days. Unfortunately, they also tend to look unpolished, but adding a little extra oomph along the top gives an ordinary pony old-school charm that works for day or night. The key to Emma Stone's hairstyle is adding height at the crown, says celebrity stylist Umberto Savone. To get the look, use a small brush to tease a section of hair at the top of your head to create lift. Then gather strands into a ponytail and secure with an elastic band. You can hide the elastic by wrapping a piece of hair around it and tucking ends underneath and secure with bobby pins. Lightly brush over the crown to smooth out any unruly pieces.

17

Polished Pixie

A slicked-backed style like Emma Watson's adds instant sophistication to any look. Plus, "it's a chic way to pull short hair off your face on a hot summer day," says Savone. It's also an easy way to give short hair a dressy finish for a formal event, he adds. To create the look, apply an anti-frizz serum to wet hair, comb into a deep side part and blow dry straight (or air dry). Once hair is dry, apply an oil-based serum from root to tip. Comb through to set, and you're good to go.

18

Trendy Tousle

By adding edgy texture, a short cut can be made over for summer, says Jahanbigloo. While longer bangs like Evan Rachel Wood's would normally fall on the forehead, giving them some lift keeps them off the face, making the look ideal for hot days. Before blow drying hair, apply a volumizing mousse to the front pieces. Then use your fingers to pull hair away from your face as you dry it. Once strands are dry, apply pomade to the front pieces, lifting and pulling them upward and to the side of your forehead. And don't stress about perfecting the style: The less structured the hair is, the more modern it will look.

19

Full Top Knot

When a summer fete calls for formal attire, a pristine updo, like this one worn by Elizabeth Banks, is a pretty way to pull your hair back. The sleek look is especially ideal for steamy days when humidity can take its toll on loose strands, says Savone. To achieve the style, apply a bit of styling wax to dry hair, slick it back using a brush, and gather it into a ponytail at the top of your crown. Separate hair into three sections, teasing each to create added volume. Twist and wrap sections, one at a time, around the elastic band and secure with bobby pins.

20

Braided Updo

Elegant and effortless, J. Lo's 'do is perfect for a casual afternoon or an evening on the town. Separate hair into two sections, with hair parted in the middle. "Hold hair horizontal to braid so will fold over head without bulging. Pull on outer edges of braid to soften it up and pin ends on the opposite braid's base. Pull out sections around face to soften the look even more," says Mattoni.

21

Soft Sweep

Jessica Alba's wavy half-up, half-down 'do has a casual feel that's equal parts beachy and romantic. If your hair has a natural wave, skip the hot tools and let it air dry or quickly defuse it, says Savone. Or you can create waves by spritzing a sea salt spray onto dry hair and scrunching strands, he notes. To complete the look, twist two small sections of hair on either side of your face and secure them at the back of your head. Leave the ends out and secure with bobby pins.

22

Side Braid

A plain plait that corrals your strands is a hot weather staple — especially if you haven't had time to wash your hair or are coming straight from the beach. Although a regular braid straight down your back can look dated and tack on years, when it's worn on the side like Nicole Kidman's, it will work for all ages. Jahanbigloo notes, however, that "the look works best with thick, long hair, otherwise it can seem flat and lifeless." Achieving this braid is a cinch: Gather dry hair to one side just under your ear. Divide it into three sections and braid, securing the end with an elastic band. To make it more casual and undone-looking, leave a few wispy pieces out around your face.

23

Half-Up Bun with Curls

Kate Middleton's mini-knot is a playful way to keep hair off your face on humid days — but still has off a romantic vibe, thanks to the loosely flowing locks. First wrap 1- to 2-inch sections of hair around a curling iron from end to root, so that the bottom of your hair has bounce. Repeat until your entire head is curled. Separate hair into a top and bottom section. Back-comb the top section to create more height and then pull it straight back into a mini-ponytail, leaving some slack at the crown for extra lift. Secure with an elastic band. Divide the ponytail into two sections and wrap each, one at a time, around the elastic band to form the bun. Fasten with bobby pins.

24

Undone Updo

The beauty of Gabrielle Union's look is that the pretty tendrils dress up a very practical method of keeping cool during the summer months — pulling your hair back into a low updo. The loose strands lend the look a casual flair that's still fancy enough for any occasion, says Jahanbigloo. To achieve the style, first part hair in the middle. Wrap strands around a 1-inch barrel curling iron until your entire head is curled. Leave the front strands out and sweep the rest of your hair up into a ponytail, fastening with an elastic band. Wrap the ponytail around the elastic band and secure with bobby pins. Finish with a lightweight hairspray to set.

25

Wispy Roll

For a twist on an ordinary bun, try Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor's ladylike look. Not only is it polished, there's no need to use any hot tools to create this style — a major plus for humid nights. Start by applying a styling cream to damp hair and comb hair into a middle part. Take 3-inch sections of hair on either side of your head and loosely twist each from the front of your head to the back. Gather twists, along with the rest of your hair, and create a messy bun, and let air dry. Fasten with bobby pins that match the color of your hair to create a seamless look.
