Surprising facts you didn’t know about green tea

By Lisa Smith, Monagiza

Healthy, natural dieting habits are all the rage nowadays, as people seek to combat the numerous ailments and conditions presented by current lifestyles. Green tea has not been left behind, holding on to its health importance for centuries. Originally from China, this herb has now spread across Asia and is produced in many parts of the world.

It is made from the leaves of a plant called Camellia Sinensis. This is the same plant from which black and oolong tea are made. Unlike these two which are fermented, green tea is processed by being dried and steamed at a high temperature. Aside from the fact that it’s been time-proven to have significant health benefits for humans, modern research has further ascertained this.
Surprising facts you didn’t know about green tea

Let’s take a look at some surprising facts that you probably didn’t know about green tea.

1. Green tea has been around for over 4000 years. It was originally discovered in China, and has since then been used for its medicinal and soothing abilities. It is now popular worldwide.

2. It is recommended to drink green tea between meals instead of with meals. This is because tannins that are found in green tea inhibit the body’s ability to absorb and process iron and other minerals and nutrients.

3. Besides being a beverage, green tea can be taken as a supplement in capsule form or as a liquid extract.

4. It can be used as a cleaning agent in the house. Due to its astringent properties, it can be used to remove greasy stains on wooden floors and counters. After clean up, it leaves behind a nice green tea scent.

5. Green tea has anti-aging properties. Antioxidants such as catechins and polyphenols in green tea slow down skin aging. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins present inhibit bad enzymes that break down the skin’s elastin and collagen, keeping wrinkles at bay. Applying green tea on skin can also reduce sun damage.

6. Green tea can be used as a natural hair rinse. Due to its antioxidant properties, it protects hair from harmful UV rays and free radicals. This rinse is made by soaking a tea bag in a cup of hot water for half an hour. Once it’s cooled, use it to rinse hair after washing. This will result in strengthened follicles and shaft, along with a natural sheen.

10. Green tea can help freshen up puffy, tired, and bloodshot eyes. This is done by placing soaked and chilled tea bags over the eyes for a while. Tannins present in green tea provide a cooling effect. Vitamin K which is also present is essential in relieving the puffiness.
