If there were ever a time to bedazzle your hair, it's here and now. While 2020 may be the year of bangs and lived-in updos when it comes to hairstyles, dressing up your 'do with something is all the rage in the accessories category. Oversize headbands? Check. Pearls on pearls? Cute! The return of the scrunchie? Count us in.

According to expert hair stylist Elle Hegarty of Ian McCabe Studio, this year is all about comebacks. "Get ready to see some of your favorite trends relieved and reimagined because 2020 is all about headbands, scrunchies, and barrettes," she says. "There has also been a resurgence of bows and floral everything on the runways (think Amalfi coast getaway), which will make for beautiful accents to springtime outfits." Ahead, we've narrowed down six of the easiest hair accessory trends to try today.



Hair Accessory Trend: Oversized Headbands


What was once meant for toddlers has now become a hair accessory trend your Instagram feed is likely all too familiar with. This season, headbands are dominating the hair scene, in part because it's a foolproof way to up your hair game (even hairstyle-challenged folks can take part in it) and in part because it gives us Blair Waldorf vibes. We're getting endless inspiration from celebrities and influencers alike who are making the perfectly placed band look chic, put together, and downright stylish. The beauty of this trend? Its versatility. Throw a headband on top of polished curls, a messy low bun, or even a high ponytail. And if you're feeling fancy, you can double up on trends and opt for a pearl-studded or floral headband.




Hair Accessory Trend: Scrunchies


This popular '80s hair trend is back, and it seems we're not the only ones happy about it. The hashtag #scrunchiesareback has garnered nearly 75,000 posts, and for good reason. Scrunchies are more of a fashion statement today than they were when they first made their debut (when people simply used them to get their hair out of their face at home), but this nostalgic style has proven to be both fresh and functional. Wrap one over a messy topknotmessy topknot or stack a few on the wrist for a cool-girl, cool-boy vibe.

When pearl accessories (among other shiny hair ornaments) had a moment at New York Fashion Week, we knew we were on to something. By nature pearls add a sense of refined chicness to any look. Beyond the runway, we've also seen celebrities putting their own spin on this classic trend, from Cardi B.'s pearled updo at the Grammys to Leticia Wright's constellation of pearls on her pixie cut at the Oscars.
