7 Hair Trends That Will Take Over Summer 2020

Your go-to ponytail is about to be jealous.

Summer is the season for breezy dresses, icy treats, and, more often than not, ponytails—simply because they're easy and keep your neck cool. But this is the time to step outside your comfort zone. From emerging Instagram trends to runway and red carpet styles that are bound to take off in real life, we’re predicting these seven looks will be everywhere for summer 2020.

Over-the-Top Flowers

There were a number of kitschy hair accessories on the Marc Jacobs runway, but the ‘70s-inspired faux orchids were among the most wearable and fun.

As long as there continue to be new and different ways to wear flowers in our hair, we'll keep sharing them. At Missoni’s Spring ‘20 show, for instance, hair was wrapped and pinned around the stem to create a floral French twist that would be stunning for a summer wedding.

Ropetails

To create the two-strand plaits seen at the Ulla Johnson Spring ‘20 show, secure hair in a ponytail, section it off in two, twist each section into long ropes, wrap them around each other, then secure again at the bottom. Et voilà, you’ve mastered the trend.

Even better, you don't need crazy-long hair to wear the look, as this model on the Jonathan Simkhai runway demonstrates.

All Tied Up

For an evening-ready take on the trend, try a swirly and sophisticated—but still nonchalant—bun like Selena Gomez’s.

Braided Pigtails

The models at Dior could have walked straight off the runway to Coachella Valley in their boho braids.

In contrast, the pigtails at Max Mara were pulled tight and topped off with Breton hats for a sleek, utilitarian feel.

“To keep the look modern, the highlights should be soft and delicate at the root, and gradually get thicker and heavier toward the ends,” says Papanikolas.

Shaggy Bobs

The classic cut isn’t going anywhere, but it is evolving. “Instead of clean lines, we’ll see more jagged edges with a roughed-up texture,” predicts Papanikolas. Lucy Boynton's crop is right on the money.

Maya Hawke's shoulder-length shag was one of 2019's most covetable haircuts, so it's no surprise she's ahead of the trend with her slightly shorter version.
