Under-eye circles can appear on even the most rested of faces, so having a routine that shows this sensitive area some TLC is never a bad idea. If dark circles seem to be a constant companion, you can likely blame genetics. Cosmetic dermatologist, Paul Jarrod Frank, told Allure that, "The undereye area is one of the thinner areas and is easily neglected in basic skincare. There is a strong genetic component to dark circles, which is out of people's control."

Fortunately, all hope isn't lost, and there are plenty of ways to help de-puff your under eyes. One of the easiest ways to avoid enhancing your dark circles is to start wearing sunscreen, particularly if you notice more pigment in that area of your face. You can use products that contain lightening agents such as Vitamin C, kojic acid, and licorice extract to help reverse sun damage and lessen the pigmentation. Apply the product in the morning and at night so that it absorbs while you sleep. From there, invest in a good sunscreen as well to protect from further exposure.

Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference in the appearance of dark circles. For one, you can start sleeping propped up higher to decrease the blood flow to that area of your face — even just a second pillow will do (via Byrdie). Getting more rest can also help de-puff your under eyes, especially when you combine it with a healthy level of hydration. Board-certified dermatologist Robert Finney explains, "When you are dehydrated, your body tries to hold on to all the fluid it can which could contribute to under-eye puffiness."

Other changes that people have tested to decrease under-eye puffiness include cutting out dairy, taking antihistamines for their allergies, and even putting turmeric extract on the area to reduce inflammation (via Byrdie). But, a classic remedy can still work wonders — using the cold spoon. Using two clean, cold spoons straight out of the freezer can instantly make a difference in your under-eye circles. The influx of cold helps to reduce fluid retention while the pressure begins the body's natural drainage process.

With these tricks, you won't need to reach for the concealer first thing in the morning after all.
