In
the pre-YouTube days, mastering makeup was a matter of trial-and-error —
which means that most of us, as teenagers, suffered through our fair
share of beauty fails (think: orange foundation and raccoon eyeliner).
These days, thankfully, we have beauty bloggers to teach us all the important beauty lessons we’d rather not learn the hard way. Manny Gutierrez, aka Manny MUA, is one of the best at the moment.
[post_ads]In a video posted to his wildly-popular YouTube channel last week, Gutierrez tackled the issue of cakey foundation — easily one of the most common makeup mistakes. In a nearly 15-minute video, the blogger (and first male ambassador for Maybelline) outlined a series of foolproof steps for ensuring your full-coverage foundation stays flawless all day long. While it’s quite a bit more time consuming than just sponging on your base and letting it be, Gutierrez’s foundation hack is actually pretty simple. Most importantly, it works.
To ensure a flawless finish, Gutierrez recommends first moisturizing to combat any dryness, and then applying a silicone-based makeup primer, such as Benefit's the POREfessional Primer. According to Gutierrez, silicone-based primers effectively fill in the pores, which give the skin "the most smooth and flat surface as possible." After working the primer into the skin — specifically, the oilier areas of the face — Gutierrez sprays his face with primer water for a little extra hydration, since dryness can make cakey foundation even more obvious. Then, it’s time to apply the foundation using a dampened Beautyblender. Gutierrez recommends applying the foundation primarily to the T-zone; once it’s on, you can use a buffing brush to lightly buff the color out towards the edges of your face (this keeps the look light and fresh).
After the foundation is on, lightly dab your sponge over your face "to pick up any excess product that may be leftover," without removing any coverage. If you need concealer, apply it to the under eye area and the high planes of the face, and buff it out using a sponge, Then, Gutierrez bakes his under-eye area and smile lines, using a translucent powder to set the foundation in areas prone to creasing. For the remainder of the face, Gutierrez advises using a powder puff to tap on a finely-milled powder, such as CoverFX Loose Setting Powder (the key here is to tap it on lightly, but not smudge the foundation in the process).

After leaving
the powder on to set for about ten minutes, you’ll want to use a brush
to lightly sweep off any excess. Finally, Gutierrez uses a finishing
powder (specifically, Mac Mineralized Skin Finish)
to brush off the excess powder on his cheekbones and temples to give
the skin a "life-like finish." End with a setting spray (see our faves here), which helps to “melt in the powders on the face” and give the skin a luminous, dewy-looking look.
