If there’s one hairstyle that defined the early aughts, it was space buns: Two baby buns perched high on either side of the head, usually separated by a super-straight middle part (think Baby Spice circa 1998). Plus, women with natural hair have been rocking space buns as a cute and protective hairstyle for a long time.

This time, though, the throwback style is getting a serious upgrade, with pretty accents like braids and glitter parts.Since space buns are easy to do and super low-maintenance, they’re a stellar style for summer 2017, especially if you like to keep your hair out of your face and off your neck during those long, humid July days.

To rock ‘em, simply part your hair down the center of your head (from the hairline to the nape of your neck) and pull each section into high, twisted knots on either side of your crown.For those with a little more hair know-how, space buns are endlessly versatile: If you have short hair, you can rock a half-up space bun look, in which you leave half of the hair free and instead, rock mini space buns atop your head. Another fun twist? Skip the center part in favor of a mini French braid part, which gives the late ‘90s look a flirty, bohemian vibe.
