Braids were big news on the spring runways—appearing at shows like Miu Miu, Dsquared, Oscar de la Renta, Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, and Giambattista Valli. But can a grown woman wear them without looking like a farm girl? Definitely yes, says New York City hairstylist Louise O'Connor, who gave model Coco Rocha a woven style for the Met Costume Institute Gala. Here, some of her favorite ways to braid:

High Fishtail Ponytail.
"It's Grecian glamorous," says O'Connor of the look Blake Lively sported at The Emmy's. Make sure to blow dry your hair with a round brush so it's silky straight before putting it up in a high ponytail. For extra length (the models at Miu Miu had some serious mileage), add clip-in extensions and then braid them loosely.

2.
Woven Headband.
"We've seen this look on Sienna Miller and Mary-Kate Olsen. It's Victorian and romantic," she says. The idea is to create one braid across the crown of your head (where you would place a headband).

Bohemian Braids.
"Nicole Richie is known for this style, and it can be worn straight or wavy," O'Connor says. Create a center part and grab the hair at the temples and braid each loosely, then pin them together in the center of the back of your head.

Partial French Braid.
"This is what Jennifer Aniston wore at the Oscars. It's a great look for day or night," she says. Begin at your part and create a French braid across your hairline, down to your ear. Tie the end with an elastic or pin it with bobby pins, and hide the spot where you secured it with some hair.
