For a hairstyle that looks so simple, a French braid along the hairline is frustratingly difficult to create. But Aussie hairstylist Sarah Potempa—who says this type of braid is an "easy way to dress up any look"—has a neat trick for approximating the summery style. While it is surprisingly easy to do (we swear!) there is one caveat: this will give you the feel of a braid, but it isn't for perfectionists.

1. Grab a piece of hair that starts at your natural part, and is about an inch wide. Instead of dividing it into the usual three sections, separate it into two pieces.
2. Criss-cross the two pieces by bringing the one that's closest to your face underneath the other. Then, add a small section of hair, from underneath the faux-braid, to the piece that's now closest to your face. Criss-cross the two sections, again by bringing the one that's closest to your face underneath the other piece.

3. Continue until the faux braid reaches behind your ear, where you can secure it with two bobby pins placed in the shape of an X.
4. Repeat on the other side of your part.
