It seems that everyone I meet—and even friends I haven't seen for a while—thinks I have eyelash extensions. In reality, I am just really, really lucky to have naturally long, curled lashes (don't hate me!), but the constant assumption that they are fake has made me sympathize with Kim Kardashian, who eventually got an x-ray to prove she didn't have butt implants. I actually show people that my lashes are real by tugging on them.

Despite my genetic luckiness, I do spend a little longer than I usually let on grooming my lashes. Here's my routine to enhance my most praised asset:
The right mascara is key. I prefer mascara with a curved wand (my current favorite is Lancôme Hypnôse Drama in Excessive Black).

I start with my bottom lashes (I was 10 when my mom taught me to first apply mascara to my lower lashes!). I do a very steady but firm shake at the roots of my lower lashes, then I wiggle the brush through to the ends. I let this dry, dip the wand again, and repeat. I then turn the brush vertically and comb through the smaller lashes that I originally missed, playing close attention to the hairs at the corners of my eyes.
Moving on to my top lashes, I always apply to the underside first, using the same application process I use for the bottom lashes. My sequence for top lashes is under, upper, under, upper--always giving each coat a chance to dry, re-dipping the wand, and slowly wiggling the brush through my lashes in order to maximize the amount of mascara that deposits. I get the most compliments when my lashes are a little clumpier, and this process really adds to the thickness.

By the time I've shaken a reloaded brush through my lashes four times, there is usually some mess to clean up. I just let the mess happen as I go and then, at the end, I carefully use Q-tips to clean up any smudges on my lids or under the eye.
