Ah, the irony: It takes a lifetime to find the perfect fragrance, and, say, an hour for it to all-out ghost you. (That’s 46 percent faster than the average Bumble date.) But ghosting is good, some argue. The ritualistic appeal of applying, and reapplying, a fine fragrance, has been extolled to me by more than one perfumer. As totally impartial as they may be, it’s fair to say that most of us would rather it just stick around in the first place.
At long last, Linger, a spray-on fragrance primer, can make that happen. It looks milky, but goes on odorless and colorless under any fragrance, and promises to make your perfume last longer—three to five hours longer. Like any primer, it works by forming a barrier between a product and your skin’s natural oils and sweat, which can break down pigment (or in this case, scent particles). “Its silicone polymer shield keeps perfume molecules suspended slightly above the skin, so it doesn’t come into contact directly with the oils and perspiration,” says Abby Wallach, co-founder of ScentInvent, the company behind the new primer. “It’s almost as if it’s captured in a net.”

It also hydrates your skin a bit, and is alcohol-free, since dry, thirsty skin will absorb fragrance more quickly than skin that’s plump and moisturized. Though our beauty director makes a good point about this last perk—you could just wear lotion. And it’s not the only fragrance extender around.
FragranceLock , a spray you can layer on top of your fragrance, uses a water-resistant copolymer to keep your perfume from doing its vanishing act for a full workday, not just five hours. But Linger is the only one that blocks your skin’s sweat-and-oil sabotage, and it does work. I tried it on one wrist during one afternoon before misting both with a perfume I’d never worn before (and immediately didn't like). Guess which one smelled awful until quitting time?
