17 New Hair Colors to Try this Summer

By Julius Choudhury, dearJulius.com

Stuck in a hair color rut? Summer, that season you emerge from self-imposed hibernation and tend to go out Every. Single. Night offers maximum exposure for the new hue. Here, a few genius colorists offer some summer-perfect ideas to help inspire you.

Changing your hair color can be frightening, but sometimes the change is worth it. Summer is the perfect time to try out a new look, and dyeing your hair can instantly change everything. Summer hair should be brighter, giving the effect of a sun-kissed glow. If you haven’t really experimented with your hair before, start out small by only changing your hair a few shades brighter. If you’re uncomfortable with dying your whole head, or simply don’t want to deal with the hassle of maintaining it, opt for highlights. They can make your hair look entirely different, despite not dying everything. If you do decide to change your hair color completely, shades of red-bronze, golden-brown, and platinum blonde are now in style. If you want a look that’s a bit more free-spirited, play around with bright colors. Right now, opal hues have taken over from previous pastel shades, and darker jewel tones are also now being seen. Shades like eggplant and deep green are chosen as a more subtle alternative to the popular pastels. If you know you want a change but aren’t sure what, ask your stylist for suggestions.

When dying your hair, going to a professional stylist is well worth the money. DIY hair can easily go wrong, particularly when working with bleach and more experimental colors. Box hair dyes are also very damaging and will change the chemical composition of your hair if used too long. Also, make sure to go to a salon that uses a brand such as Redken, whose dyes are ammonia-free and not as damaging to hair. If you aren’t sure what brand your salon uses and if it’s ammonia-free, ask. Also, be sure to ask about maintenance for your particular color, as some shades, such as reds and unnatural colors fade particularly fast.  Above all, make sure you leave the salon with a look you love.
