Cereal Hair Is the Latest Nostalgic Hair Color Trend Taking Over Instagram

By Devon Abelman, Allure

You're never too old to indulge in a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. And I have proof. Not only are there lines out the door at New York City's Milk and Cream Cereal Bar — where you can get ice cream topped with your favorite childhood breakfast treat — but cereal hair is also apparently a thing now. It's the latest food-themed hair color trend taking over Instagram. (I know it's Monday, but #tbt to salmon sushi hair.) Hairstylists are dying their clients's hair rainbow shades that pay homage to the sugary cereals of our youth including Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, and Fruity Pebbles.

PopSugar first pointed out the existence of Fruity Pebbles hair. "To achieve this look [Amanda Glikes, a Vancouver-based stylist,] dyed the roots hot pink and added streaks of yellow, orange, and green," the site explained. "She left the underside of the hair brown, which makes it look like the model's mane has been enveloped in colorful cereal milk." The last part might be a bit of a stretch, but Fruity Peebles hair is definitely cute.

A stylist named Vanna at Altered Image Hair Designers in Durham, NC, got inspired by the Flintstones-themed cereal, too. She went with a blonde base with rainbow under-lights, though.

As I mentioned, Froot Loops hair is also making its rounds on Instagram. Ally DeStout, an Ohio-based hairstylist, dyed one of her clients's hair basically every color of the rainbow to look like a bowl of Froot Loops. Unlike Fruity Peebles hair, DeStout didn't paint the colorful highlighters over (or under) a milk-like base.

And who could forget good ol' Trix cereal? Trix hair is very similar to Froot Loops hair. A stylist named Natalie at This or Die Salon in Los Angeles, CA, streaked someone's hair with bold variations of green, yellow, blue, purple, pink, and red. TBH just looking at it is making me crave a bowl of the cereal. (I need the fruit-shaped version, though. I'm not here for today's naturally-colored swirled balls.)

Another cereal hair trend I'm loving right now is Lucky Charms hair. The color palette is much softer and more pastel than the other cereal hair trends out there. Mary Ott, a Pennsylvania-based stylist, mixed neon Pulp Riot dyes with a clear base to create lilac, sky blue, lemon yellow, mint green, and coral hues. She later brushed them onto platinum blonde hair to create this delectable look.

What other fruity cereals can be turned into a hair color trend? Now that I think of it, Apple Jacks hair has yet to grace my Instagram feed. But let's be real, that definitely wouldn't look as cool as the multi-hued cereal hair looks above.
