Ask any French woman to spill the contents of her skin-care routine, and nine times out of ten, micellar water
is bound to be at the top of the list. The cleansing water, formulated
to remove makeup, cleanse, and tone skin in just a few swipes of a
cotton ball, has quickly become a stateside mainstay over the years. So
much so that stocking up on the stuff is now as easy as stopping in at
your local drugstore.

But for one avid micellar water fan, cleansing with the French-loved treatment unfortunately caused more harm than good — and now she's sharing her story for all the Internet to see. In a recent post in the Skincare Addiction subReddit thread, Redditor skinnyjunk said after lathering up with Garnier Micellar Water, they said "something weird as fuck started growing" inside the bottle and kept getting "bigger and bigger."
"I saw some weird floating white flakes in it occasionally, but they would disappear and the liquid would look normal," says skinnyjunk. "It was a little cloudy, but I didn't notice that that was out of the ordinary and thought maybe it just hadn’t settled all the way. Well the flakes kept getting bigger until they became big white globs that would move between the two layers. And one day I saw them and that was when I finally decided that I was completely done with that bottle. Something wasn't right."
[post_ads]The questionable white sludge, which formed in the bottom of the bottle, started "setting [skinnyjunk]'s skin on fire," which then caused tiny red and white bumps to form. And burning — lots of burning. "I would compare it to what a damaged moisture barrier is like," says skinnyjunk. "When your skin flips out at anything you put on it and everything hurts."
We reached out to Garnier to suss out the stand-out claims. Here's what a representative for the beauty brand told Allure: "This post on Reddit is an isolated report — we have not received any other similar reports from consumers using the Garnier Micellar All-in-One Waterproof cleanser (with the blue cap)," said a Garnier spokesperson. "We are trying to get in touch with the person who posted the thread to learn more, as consumer safety is our absolute priority."
And as for those other sludge claims, the brand says the
solidification doesn't pose a health risk and has already been addressed
at the manufacturing level. "We did see the Reddit post referenced
reviews on our Garnier website about solid particles appearing in our
regular All-in-One cleanser (with the pink cap)," said the
representative. "This is a result of an ingredient (which is part of the
formula) that solidified in the micellar water and does not impact the
product’s effectiveness or present any health risk to someone using it.
We have already corrected this in our manufacturing process."
If you begin to experience negative reactions (redness, burning, breakouts, etc.) to Garnier's Micellar All-in-One Waterproof Cleanser (or any cleanser, TBH) — stop using it. If the problem continues, consult a medical professional.
