Prediction: This Fashion Week, models, editors, and stylists will bike down the streets of Copenhagen
and, amongst the sleek skyline and Scandinavian minimalism, will spot a
sea of head-turning hair accessories, perched perfectly atop Danes’ honey-toned lengths.
Chalk it up to the city’s current love affair with eclectic couplings:
“In [recent] years, the Danish fashion scene has seen more colors and
prints and mixings of different materials,” says Line Agnes Skjærlund
Nielsen of the Copenhagen boutique Nué, which carries silk scrunchies and bejeweled barrettes alongside fuzzy Acne sweaters and patterned No. 21 blouses. “It’s fun to mix and match.”

On the streets, that mélange translates to a camo-print headband alongside a jumbo-sized Chanel bag à la model Caroline Brasch Nielsen, or a cloud-blue petal clip paired with a silk chemise and silver hoops, in the case of Saks Potts designer Barbara Potts. “Right now [Danish women] love small details and to accessorize,” says Petit Trouvé’s Jannie Sander,
who landed upon a trove of vintage hair accessories (among them
sparkling stars, rainbow combs, and bird-shaped bobby pins) three years
ago in Paris. Sander sells them to Nué and a handful of other nearby
boutiques, and they’ve been so popular among locals that she now makes
the pilgrimage three times a year, often bringing back 500 or more
pieces with each visit. On the source of her treasures, Sander is mum:
“Otherwise all of Copenhagen will go buy them for themselves!” she says
with a laugh.
As Danes’ love for hair ornaments—or “jewelry for your hair,” says Kanel
designer Pauline Skaarup, who sells glitzy floral baubles by the
dozen—reaches fever pitch, one may question how much longer the trend
will last. But, if the Instagram post of freshly packaged throwback butterfly clips that Saks Potts teased for its upcoming collection is any indication, we haven’t seen the end of them just yet.
