8 Fall Updos for Long Hair

From: L’Oréal Paris

Keeping your hair out of your face isn’t reserved for summer. While updos that keep your face strand-free are awfully convenient when you’re sweating it out in the sun, they’re just as wearable in the fall—especially if you have long hair. That’s right—don’t put away your bobby pins and ponytail holders just yet—you’re going to need them after looking through this list. We’ve compiled tutorials for eight fall updos that are ideal for tying up long hair, whether you’re in need of a reprieve from hair that gets in the way or you’re looking to make a stylish statement—or both. Find each look below, broken down into simple steps. Seriously, what are you waiting for?

#1: Double Knot

Chances are you learned to tie knots sometime during childhood, meaning you’ve already managed the basics of this technique. No excessive time or tribulations needed—just the same skills that made you a master at tying shoelaces.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Cleanse and condition.

Have a frizz-fighting shampooshampoo and conditioner at the ready. Try the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz Defy Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz Defy Conditioner

Step 2: Apply hair serum.

After allowing your locks to air dry, it’s time to get glossy. Apply a hair serum, like the L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Frizz Finish Oil-in-Serum, to to dry strands.

Step 3: Create a middle part.

Using a comb, split your hair into two sections, straight down the middle.

Step 4: Make knots.

Hold the two sections of your hair, one in each hand and knot them together. Repeat, making two knots in total.

Step 5: Secure with pins.

Use bobby pins to secure your knots, slipping them into hidden spots. Leave the ends loose for a more casual style.

#2: Upside Down Braid

Who says braids have to start at the top of your head? Certainly, not us! Braid from the bottom up, leading to a big bun for a style that’s double the fun—braids and buns.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Flip over

Turn your head upside down, brushing all of your hair over your head and in front of your face.

Step 2: Braid

Using the “top” section of the underneath of your hair, start on a French braid.

Step 3: Secure with an elastic

After braiding about two-thirds of the way up your head, stop and secure with a clear hair tie.

Step 4: Make a bun

Gather all of your hair that is not in the braid and pull it into a basic bun.

Step 5: Add another elastic

One more hair tie! Slip it around the base of your bun to hold everything in place.

#3: Classic Chignon

There’s no questioning the classic nature of a chignon, meaning there’s no reason to wax poetic about the perfectly poised style. This easy chignon may be effortless, but it certainly doesn’t look that way—a.k.a., all the makings of a good hairstyle.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Use texturizing spray

Give your hair worn in texture with a wave spray, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray. A few spitzes should do the trick.

Step 2: Gather hair

Collect all of your hair behind your head, forming a low ponytail.

Step 3: Twist

Holding the end of the ponytail, twist your hair.

Step 4: Create a coil

Wrap the twist around itself, forming a coil at the nape of your neck.

Step 5: Secure with pins

Add pins throughout to lock your look in. A final misting of hairspray, like the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold, will also help give your style more hold.

#4: Ballerina Bun

Ballerinas are known for their astounding grace and strength, but let’s not forget the beautiful hair. Their simplistic buns can withstand extreme exercise, all the while looking absolutely on-trend.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Cut up a sock

Yes, a sock! They keep your feet warm—and help create the best buns. Choose a sock close to your hair color and cut off the end where your toes go—turning it into a tube.

Step 2: Put your hair in a ponytail

Collect all of your hair high on your head and put a hair tie around the base of the ponytail.

Step 3: Place the sock around the ponytail

Roll your previously chopped up sock into a donut shape and slip it over your ponytail, making sure all of your hair is within the sock “donut.”

Step 4: Pull the sock to the end of the ponytail

Move the sock down the length of the ponytail, so just an inch or two are left outside. Then, tuck the ends of the ponytail over the sock and push them back through the center.

Step 5: Roll down

Holding the sock, begin to roll it down towards the base of the ponytail. As you go, your hair should cover the sock.

Step 6: Secure with pins

Once the sock has reached the top of your head, make sure it’s completely hidden by your hair. Use bobby pins to secure.

Step 7: Add an accessory

Accessories are always optional, but if you’d like to amp up your look, a sparkly clip or comb is sure to do the trick.

#5: Low Twists

Sometimes one bun or twist just isn’t enough to contain long locks. Try creating three twists at the base of your neck for a secure style that includes every inch of your length.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Create three low ponytails

At the base of your head, separate your hair into three sections, or ponytails, and secure each with a thin elastic.

Step 2: Twist

Twist the ponytails, then wrap them around themselves to form three small, twisted buns.

Step 3: Secure with pins

Add pins around the twists to keep them from unraveling.

Step 4: Use hairspray

Spray the completed style with a strong hold hairspray, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray.

#6: Messy Bun

There’s nothing wrong with letting your mane look a little messy. When you’re in a rush, or your hair refuses to work with you (#badhairday), there’s a must-know fix. Toss your tresses into a bun. (We’re such fans of this messy style, and others, that we previously shared a few of our favorite messy styles. Check out our article, Perfectly Imperfect: 9 Low-Maintenance Undone Hairstyles.)

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Apply mousse

Work a body-building mousse, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Ruffled Body Mousse, through damp hair, then leave it to air dry the rest of the way.

Step 2: Pull hair into a ponytail

Gather your hair in a ponytail at the back of your head.

Step 3: Form a bun

Twist the end of the ponytail around the base, creating a bun. Go against your inclinations and don’t bother to be too careful with curating your style. The sloppier the better.

Step 4: Secure with an elastic

Wrap an elastic around the base of the bun to hold it in place. Skip using pins to hold down loose sections—instead, let those imperfections stay where they are.

Step 5: Mess it up

If your perfectionist nature has gotten the best of you, it isn’t too late. When your bun comes out looking a tad too pulled together, tug at small sections to rough up the look.

#7: Braided Chignon

You already know that chignons are completely classic, but you can certainly put your own spin on the style. Putting your hair into a plaid, prior to creating the chignon is our method of choice. Give it a shot for your cutting-edge style.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Create a middle part

Part your hair down the middle, forming two separate sections.

Step 2: Braid

Braid—just a standard braid will do—each section, then secure the ends with elastics.

Step 3: Make knots.

Knot the completed braids together, twice.

Step 4: Tuck the ends

Tuck the ends of the knots, hiding them underneath. Use pins to secure.

#8: French Twist

If there just so happens to be a special occasion in your near future, look no further. A French twist is suited for all the dressy events in your life, from school dances to weddings to holidays. It’s the hairdo that just keeps giving. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it’s just so chic.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Cleanse and condition

For a special day, obviously, you’ll want hair that’s clean. Use a system of shampoo and conditioner meant to purify oily roots while hydrating dry ends, like the L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Clay Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Clay Conditioner

Step 2: Apply mousse.

While your hair is damp, apply a volumizing mousse, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse. Bonus points if it doubles as a heat protection. (Hint, hint. We’re about to heat style.)

Step 3: Blow-dry

You know how this part goes! Grab a round brush and dry your hair completely.

Step 4: Create a side part

Using a comb, part your hair far to one side. (Your pick!)

Step 5: Gather hair

Pull the hair from one side towards the back of your head and pin down at the nape of your neck.

Step 6: Gather again

Pull the rest of your hair towards the back of your head, stopping where you placed the pins.

Step 7: Twist

With all of the hair at the base of your neck, create a spiral while pulling up.

Step 8: Secure with pins

Use pins to hold the twist.

Step 9: Tuck the ends.

Hide and pin any ends that are left hanging out.
