Winged eyeliner just isn't what it used to be anymore. Simple, precise points are so, as Hilary Duff would say, yesterday. Pat McGrath is rounding it out. Another MUA created an inverted version
that made brains melt everywhere. And others on Instagram are turning
their winged liner into actual butterfly wings. The butterfly eye makeup
that's been taking over Instagram explore pages lately is probably one
of the more intricate and literal takes I've seen on winged liner as of
late. Makeup artists are painting on liner and eye shadow to look like
they glued a butterfly wing onto their eyelids. (Of course, no actual
butterflies are harmed in the process, in case you were wondering.) The
result is gorgeous and reminds me of my days of visiting a butterfly garden in South Florida when I was a kid.
Next, paint on arcs along your crease that connect to the winged
liner. Then, create vertical lines that connect the meeting points of
the arcs to the line along your lashline. From there, you can etch
little white dots to add to the realism of the butterfly eye makeup.
Pretty easy, right? Sure, it takes a bit more time than simple winged
liner, but the end result looks a lot more impressive than the actual
work you put it in.

Here are more butterfly eye makeup looks I've been living for. I'm definitely keeping these in mind for Halloween.

Even
though butterfly eye makeup looks like you need the artistic skills of
Picasso, you only really need to know how to do winged liner. Start off
by covering your lid in a brightly colored shadow. You could either
brush on one shade or blend two or three together. Then, draw on winged
liner as you typically would with black liquid liner — lining along your
lashlines before winging it outward toward the tails of your brows. You can see a pictorial of the look, below. An aspiring makeup artist based in Australia who goes by @makeup.by.chels_ put it together.
