Braids
have been having a serious moment in the beauty world lately—so much so
that it wouldn’t even be fair to consider them a trend at this point.
It’s safe to say braids are officially here to stay. In fact, braids can
be the perfect hairstyle to help instantly elevate your look. From
traditional braids to French braids to fishtail braids to Dutch braids,
there are so many different kinds you can create.

One type that we’re seriously in love
with at the moment? The waterfall braid! This free-flowing braid is
perfect for every situation, from a day spent at the office to a
summertime music festival. And just in time for the warmer weather,
we’re here to show you how to create this super-pretty hairstyle. It’s
time to master your waterfall braid technique!
What you’ll need:
- Texturizing spray
- Comb
- 1-inch curling iron
- Bobby pins
- Mini clear elastics
Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Start with day-old hair.
As
with many braids, the waterfall braid can look particularly gorgeous
when paired with texture. So, go ahead and rock one the day after you
wash your hair. Before you begin braiding, though, spritz on a little
texturizing spray for added grip.
Step 2: Brush out any tangles.
There’s nothing worse than trying to braid knotty hair. Be sure to
gently comb through any tangles before moving on to the actual creation
of your look.
Step 3: Create beach waves.
There’s no better combo than waterfall braids and slightly tousled beach waves. To get the look, warp your hair around a 1-inch curling iron, concentrating the curl towards your ends.
Step 4: Divide your hair.
Part
your hair on one side of your head. Prep to begin braiding from your
part down towards your ear on the thicker side of your part. In typical
braid fashion, split your hair into three sections—one right by your
part, one below it, and one just above your ear.

Step 5: Make your first weave.
Create a traditional braid stitch by crossing the top and bottom strands over the middle.
Step 6: Add more hair.
Add hair into the top strand then cross it over the middle strand.
Step 7: Let go of your first waterfall drop.
Drop down the bottom strand and pick up a new section of hair, crossing
it over the middle strand in place of the dropped strand.
Step 8: Repeat!
Repeat
steps 6 and 7, creating a waterfall braid until you reach the back of
your head. You could stop here by pinning your braid in place—or you can
keep going through the rest of the steps to create a half-up waterfall
braid. Your choice!
Step 9: Round two!
Repeat steps 4-8 on the other side of your head to create a second waterfall braid.
Step 10: Combine your braids.
Using a clear mini elastic, tie your two waterfall braids together at
the back of your head to complete your half-up do. Again, you could stop
here, or you could keep going for an even more elaborate braided look!

Do so any which way you please! Seal it off with another clear mini elastic.
Step 12: Pancake your braid.
That means gently tugging it apart to make it look thicker.
Step 13: Leave your style as is—or create a bun.
At this point you can either leave the tail of your half-up pony
flowing in the wind or you can coil it into a bun to look somewhat
flower-like.

Step 14: Finish off your waterfall braid with a spritz of hairspray.
With
a hairstyle that looks that good and takes quite a bit of time and
effort to complete, you definitely want to make sure that it stays put
for whatever your day has in store. Use a hairspray, like the L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray to help secure your style.
