The Key to Lipstick That Lasts

Years ago, I did Beyoncé's makeup for a performance,and in the middle of the show, I watched in horror as her cherry red lipstick migrated all over her face. That's when I made it my mission to find a way to apply it that's bulletproof. Our model here, Katherine, loves to wear bold lipstick but has experienced similar meltdowns. So I taught her how a little prepping action will lend maximum staying power to any shade.

Create a Barrier

To keep your lipstick from bleeding, trace your regular concealer around the outer edge of your mouth, then press it into the skin with your finger to blend.

Prime Your Lips

Next, tap a thin layer of the concealer over your entire mouth. (If your lips are dry, dab on a bit of waxy balm first and wait a minute for it to be absorbed.) This helps your lipstick adhere so it won't fade or run.

Apply The Color

When in doubt, a medium coral shade flatters all skin tones. Swipe it on, following the natural shape of your lips. To make them appear fuller, you can go a smidge outside your lip line, but no more!

Blot and Repeat

Blotting removes the excess moisture that causes feathering. Fold a tissue in half, then lightly pat it along your entire mouth, including the lip line. Add a second coat of color, press your lips together to set, and you're done.
