A skin doctor and makeup artist explain how to save face when the weather changes
Finally
today officially marks the start of Autumn, and with it has come colder
climes. Year after year we recognise this can cause havoc with our
complexions, but most of us just put up with the sudden dry skin and
persistent outbreaks. Well, we asked Simple's dermatologist Dr Philippa
Lowe and makeup artist Lisa Valencia their top tips for skin survival
during the season change. Act now for a happy face.

1. Check your skincare
As
we move from Summer to Autumn we need to change our skincare routines a
bit. During the colder months the humidity decreases and our use of
central heating increases – both serve to dry out skin – so stick with
your usual cleansing methods but remember to always avoid harsh,
cleansing products which can dehydrate skin.
2. Try micellar cleansing
Use
something gentle that doesn't strip your skin of its natural moisture,
for example a micellar cleansing water. The Simple one is formulated
with glycerin, and triple purified water for instant hydration.
3. Don't forget SPF
Remember,
you still need to protect your skin from the sun all year round (but
making sure that you increase your SPF from April-September and when in
hot climates) so find a good day moisturising cream that has a minimum
SPF15 and a good UVA protection. Use this as a base daily before
applying your makeup and then reapply during the day if out and about
for lengths of time.

Before
bed, gently cleanse your skin without stripping it and drying it
further with harsh chemicals and then apply a rich night moisturising
repair cream. Look for creams full of antioxidants, as nighttime is the
best time to repair the skin.
Makeup artist Lisa Valencia says:
5. Simplify your makeup routine
You'll
need to tailor your makeup routine accordingly as the seasons change
and make sure you're kind to your skin to avoid flare-ups and
sensitivity which can make it hard to get the beautiful finish you want
from your makeup. If you like the convenience of cleansing wipes, try
the new Simple x Holly Fulton Kind To Skin Cleansing Wipes because they
gently cleanse and don't dry skin out.
6. Boost your cream with oil
As
skin can become a little dryer as the temperature cools, and central
heating is turned on, after cleansing at night I add a few drops of a
rich nourishing oil to my night cream for an extra boost.

Skin
can look dull during the cooler months, so I rely on an illuminating
moisturiser for a complexion that looks bright and dewy all year round.
8. Choose a cream blush
My top tip for brightening your look with makeup is to switch to a rosy-coloured cream blush, it works wonders…
