The 4 Biggest Plastic Surgery Trends for 2018

By Sophie Wirt, Allure

As far as cosmetic procedures go — 2017 was the unofficial Year of Plumped-Up Lips. While lip augmentation is still on the rise, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) predicts some non-lip-related procedures will be all the rage in 2018. Below, the most surprising trends on the horizon for the new year.

The Laser Bra Lift

In contrast to the early 2000s trend of larger breasts, some may argue that small boobs are trending these days (though, to be clear, all shapes and sizes have been and always will be bomb). According to the ASAPS, a scalpel-free, laser-assisted breast reduction coined, "The Laser Bra Lift," could rival traditional breast reductions in 2018.

"It creates a full, perky look— it's essentially an internal bra, with no foreign material," explains Grant Stevens, a Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon, who pioneered the two-hour procedure after noticing that lasers affect breast tissue similarly to facial tissue (i.e. improved elasticity and smoothness). Instead of removing and discarding excess skin from the breast, the Laser Bra Lift leaves skin intact and treats it with a C02 laser, thereby creating an "internal bra."

Botox 2.0

Although Botox doesn't seem to be hanging up its hat anytime soon (especially considering the fact that there are multiple uses for the injectable), Michigan-based plastic surgeon, Anthony Youn, predicts "...there will a product better than Botox released in the next year." Although it's still unclear as to what exactly a better Botox will entail, he notes "there are similar products in the pipeline that will likely come out in 2018," which could eclipse Botox as the most frequently administered cosmetic injectable. Any ideas?

Customized labia

Labiaplasty — i.e. the process of reshaping the labia for aesthetics and/or comfort — jumped by 23 percent in 2016 and has been steadily increasing ever since. "The stigma is beginning to fade," notes New York City-based plastic surgeon Tracy Pfeifer, "more women are seeking treatments to increase confidence and comfort." No matter the reason behind the procedure — confidence, comfort, curiosity — in keeping with ASPS predictions, experts expect to see more procedures down there next year.

Filler...for your eyes

"2018 will be all about new uses for fillers," asserts Pfeifer. Most notably — and perhaps most surprisingly — around the eyes. Specifically, more docs will employ fillers to shape the eye area; a far cry from the notion of merely removing fat from around the eyes to minimize bags. As Pfeifer explains, "fillers to the upper and lower eyelids restore the volume that is lost around the eyes as we age." Think of it like hardcore contouring for your peepers — no palette required.

Surprising predictions, huh? Overall, we're noticing a trend in conventional procedures upgrading to faster, knife-free techniques, as well as more creative uses for fillers, because — let's be honest — nobody has time for weeks of recovery anymore. If you've seriously considered a cosmetic procedure, 2018 may be the year to do it; never have there been more advanced, varied options for specific concerns. Yay, science.
