Your Wedding-Day Makeup, Tailored to Your Personality Type

By Jenn Sinrich, Brides
Whether you’re a makeup junkie with her own YouTube channel or a bare-faced beauty who wears nothing but mascara, your wedding day is not the time to leave makeup matters up to chance.

Months before your big day, you are tasked with something very important—deciding what sort of wedding makeup look is right for you. More than anything else, you’ll want to feel like yourself, totally comfortable on your big day, which is why experts typically recommend choosing a look that complements your personality.

Here is what they prescribe, based upon your style, attitude, and individuality.

For the Fun-Loving, Wild-Child Bride...

If you’re fun and fearless, chances are you’re not afraid to express yourself through makeup. This makes you a favorite customer among makeup artists, like Brandy Gomez-Duplessis, founder of Entitled Beauty. Fresh, dewy skin is what she recommends starting out with, which can be achieved by using a lightweight foundation or even a tinted moisturizer, like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum, which comes in 14 color-matching shades. Of course, a wild-child bride can’t go without a pop of color on the lips. Gomez-Duplessis recommends Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm, which moisturizes and protects lips from that first wedded kiss, all the way through the after-party.

For the Unique and Rebellious Bride...

If you break a few harmless rules now and then (maybe one or two during your bachelorette party), the fierce and smoldering smokey eye was designed for you. “You’ll want your eyes to pop in every photo, even hours into your special day,” says Vinnetta Scrivo, a celebrity makeup artist who’s worked with Martha Stewart. “I love a bold eyeshadow with lots of individual lashes layered to complement the bride's particular eye shape.” She uses a careful combination of both browns and blacks layered on top of one another to create a feathery look. If you’re feeling the need for a little extra oomph, she adds, a strong cat eye can add some extra edginess, while still maintaining charm and glamour.

For the No-Fusses-Given, Easy-Going Bride...

Oftentimes this type of relaxed and nonchalant bride prefers a lower-key makeup look, says Gomez-Duplessis. “The goal is to give the appearance of effortless, natural beauty without enhancements,” she says. This means incorporating a lot of beiges and subtle rose and pink shades on the skin, lips, and even eyes. Gomez-Duplessis swears by the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Eyeshadow Palette, which comes with six matte neutral shades from light peach to dark charcoal. “On the cheeks, colors like rose, peach, and mauve are stunning.” Her fave to use on easy-going brides is NARS blush in Orgasm. She suggests sticking with a neutral lip that’s long-wearing, so the bride won’t have to be retouching throughout the day and night, like Entitled Beauty Liquid Lipstick In the Nude.

For the Type-A, Perfectionist Bride...

If you’re the kind of bride who calls all the shots, first things first: Make sure you’re 100 percent comfortable with the look you chose during your trial(s). Scrivo’s recommendation is to keep it classy—think Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. “These are the icons I pull ideas from when working with a bride who wants perfection,” she says. “It consists of classic makeup, lashes, liquid liner, matte shadow on the eyes to create a feminine yet classic look, and perfectly lined lips.” A classic romantic color in red or pink brings the look together. “I would go easy on the highlighter and only add a soft, not too shimmery, cream highlighter high on the cheekbone to give it a modern feel.

For the Innovative, Creative Bride...

As artists themselves, makeup professionals love working other creative-minded folks. “Imaginative people appreciate the artistic process, so we can really collaborate on the look and explore so many options,” says Scrivo. “You can really play with color and beautiful, feminine embellishments like Swarovski crystals on the face or body.” High-glam is the way to go for this kind of out-there and open-to-anything bride. “Often the focus of the look can be multiple features, so her color scheme can range from basic to bold and even extend to shocking and untraditional shades, like stark blue,” says Gomez-Duplessis. A stunning effect on this bride requires the perfect cat eye, for which she uses Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. “Because she’s a creative bride, I’d recommend going with a powerful shade of red, like the blue-red hue of Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in Elson.

For the Stubborn, Do-It-Herself Bride...

Even for the bride who likes it done her way or the highway, Scrivo recommends that brides “leave it to the professionals to alleviate stress, add support, and help you enjoy the few hours of relaxation and pampering before you put your dress on and start the party.” The best thing for this bride is to keep things basic and simple. If this is you, show your makeup artist a photo of exactly how you'd like your makeup to look, and instruct them clearly on the do's and don'ts (i.e., only a short cat eye and no fake lashes) for the best results.
