Dermatologists reveal the best face sunscreens for preventing skin cancer and slowing down aging.

If
there's one thing you put on your skin today, let it be a sunscreen.
Dermatologists harp on this over and over because it really works. Of
course, your first priority is to prevent a sunburn, which can raise
your risk for skin cancer.
But sunscreen also keeps your skin looking young. Not only does
research show it can protect your skin from the UV damage that causes
premature aging, but wearing it can actually help reverse signs of
damage and aging by lessening the look of dark spots, improving texture,
and boosting brightness, per 2016 research in the journal Dermatologic Surgery.

The sunscreen you choose for your face should really be no different
than for your body. The label needs to say "broad spectrum" to guard
against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays, says Arisa Ortiz, MD,
assistant clinical professor in the department of dermatology at
University of California, San Diego. You really have to pay attention to
the wording on the bottle because "many sunscreens only protect against
UVB rays," she says. Look for SPF 30 or higher. (SPF 30 will guard
against 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 takes care of 98% of them).

spectrum protection. And because a common fear is that sunscreen will

The broad spectrum SPF 42 is perfect if you
shy away from facial sunscreens in fear that they'll leave your face too
slick. It absorbs nicely into skin so it feels light, not sticky, and
is non-comedogenic, making it ideal if you have oily or acne-prone skin.
Peony root extract works to diminish the appearance of pores, helping
to perfect your skin before you go out. (If you want to further shield
your skin from harmful rays, make sure you try sun protective clothing.)

American Academy of Dermatology says this water-resistant,
broad-spectrum sunscreen is an excellent option for women with
acne-prone skin. “Since it’s powder it doesn’t clog the pores and never
breaks out the skin. I also recommend it to patients who have oily skin
because it helps with the 4 o’clock shine.”
Clarns Sunscreen for Face Wrinkle Control Cream SPF 30
This is another one that's earned accolades
from the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation for everyday
wear. The cream is suitable for a range of skin types from dry to oily.
And ingredients like kiwi, aloe vera, and olive provide antioxidant
protection as well as skin-quenching hydration.

Elta MD UV Facial Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends you
apply this one daily. The sunscreen contains zinc oxide plus antioxidant
vitamin E to battle damaging free radicals triggered by damaging UV
light. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture to keep you hydrated. It's also
noncomedogenic and fragrance-free, so it won't plug pores or cause
irritation. If you're looking for slightly more protection, Dr. Jaliman
says she personally uses Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46:
"It's very thin and it also has niacinamide which is vitamin B3. This
helps to lighten up hyperpigmentation which comes from acne."
You'll appreciate the broad spectrum SPF 50
mineral-based sunscreen because it covers your bases with top-notch UV
