Before you dive in: Saturate hair with fresh water so it can't absorb as much salt or chlorine.
During your swim: Keep hair tied in a braid or bun to minimize the surface area exposed to water.

After you exit: Gently comb out tangles and, if you can, rinse again with fresh water.
