5 Fall Hair Trends That Are Going to Be Huge This Season

I need somewhere special to go, STAT.

By Chloe Metzger, Marie Claire

Ah, fall. Leaves are changing, basic betches are swapping their Sperrys for their Uggs, and celebrities everywhere are abandoning their summertime hairstyles in favor of looks that are more playful, carefree, and undone (basically, anything that would have been ruined by humidity and rain).

Already, we've seen some hair trends emerging on the red carpet—like dainty accessories and natural textures—which means in just a few weeks, you'll be seeing them all over your Instagram feeds...and your co-workers. So check out this fall's newest looks, ahead, and master them fast, before Janice from accounting steals your compliments.

Floral Accents

Florals for fall? Actually groundbreaking. And while, yes, the flowers on Jasmine Sanders and Evan Rachel Wood are less of an accent and more of a full-on bouquet, you can still pull off this trend without looking like a garden nymph by threading just a few tiny rosebuds through your braid, or bobby-pinning one medium-size flower to the edge of your bun.

Angular Bobs

It's already been the year of the bob. But this fall, you'll see celebs moving away from the sleek, perfectly rounded bobs of the summer in favor of angular, wash-and-go styles, like Tessa Thompson's voluminous curls. Yes, it's officially time to make that hair appointment.

Finger Waves

Unlike the stiff, intensely gelled finger waves of the '20s—and the '90s, thanks to icons like Missy Elliott re-popularizing them—this season's finger waves are definitively softer and simpler.

You can copy Greta Gerwig's modernized spin on the trend by curling your face-framing layers with a wand before pinning the waves flat against your head with duck bill clips. Or go for Yara Shahidi's classic take by combing gel and smoothing cream through your damp hair, then using your fingers and a comb to create the swooping retro waves.

Itty-Bitty Accessories

If this summer was the season of the bobby-pin (and it most definitely was), then this fall is the season of the tiny hair accessories, as seen on Letitia Wright's half-up knot that's decorated with mini crystals. If jewels aren't your thing, pick up a few funky hair clips and scatter them throughout your bun for a casual, yet purposeful, finish.

Face-Framing Layers

Yes, the '90s (and early, early aughts) are officially back, and they've brought your favorite untucked hair trend with them. But unlike the wispy, stick-straight look of yesteryear (ahem, Keira Knightley), this season's trend features thicker, choppier chunks of hair that quite literally frame the face.

To get the look at home, separate your shortest layers of hair before creating a bun or ponytail. Wrap each side around a curling iron for a few seconds to create a soft wave, then tuck the curls behind your ears while they cool to get a natural-looking bend, à la Mandy Moore and Priyanka Chopra.
