9 Hot Hair Colors for Summer

According to Moroccanoil's celebrity colorist, Lorri Goddard.

By Carly Cardellino, Cosmopolitan

While last summer's hair color vibe was on the cooler-toned side, this season Goddard is taking her clients (Disclaimer: Not everyone mentioned below has their hair colored by her!) down a warmer route. — and we're not surprised. Especially since golden tones in the hair instantly warm up the skin and complement a summer-induced, sun-kissed glow flawlessly.

1 Natural-Looking Golden Highlights

Everyone is growing out their lobs for a slightly longer, more bohemian vibe, which pairs perfectly with natural-looking golden highlights, Goddard says. It’s all about embracing (or mimicking what would be) your natural sun-kissed color, like Chloe Moretz's, this summer!

Wanna make your color last as long as possible? Moroccainoil's got your covered with their new color complete line.

2 Warmer Tones

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on
Embracing the warmth of summer means opting for warmer brunette, blonde, and red hues when it comes to hair color, Goddard says. Cool tones tend to contrast against your complexion (in a good way!), while warmer tones, well, bring a golden warmth to your skin for a more overall glowing effect like Beyoncé's.

3 Coral-Toned Reds

Coral-toned reds are trending this season because again, everyone always wants to go warmer for summer, Goddard says. So, if you're already a redhead and want to switch it up, or you want to go red from the shade you currently are, ask your colorist if a coral-toned red, like Madeline Petcsh's, will complement your complexion.

4 Pastels

Like many fashion statements, we're seeing an evolution of color in hair, Goddard says. People are playing with pastels, but in a softer way, she adds.

With any bright color, you're going to want to start with a light base (ask your colorist for a double process), and then you can play with different shades from there, applying temporary color onto your strands to get the look. Want to get a few different tones out of one specific shade? Start with a deep version of pink, for example, and then each time you wash it, it will get lighter and lighter, eventually leaving you with a paler color, like Fernanda Ly's.

5 Tailormade Tips

A post shared by Gigi Hadid (@gigihadid) on
Ombrè color is out (for now!), according to Goddard. Instead, people are really embracing solid colors with a slight edge. Take Gigi's hair for example: The top of her hair is a stunning butterscotch shade with subtly lightened tips that makes for a fresh twist on a gradated effect, she explains.

6 Solid Shades

You can also expect to see a lot more solids hair hues, like Selena's, in softer colors this summer, Goddard explains. Having trouble figuring out what your natural hair hue might be? Use your brows as a reference!

7 Honey Blondes

A post shared by Lucy Hale (@lucyhale) on
This summer is all about honey highlights with warmer tones rather than ashy (cooler-toned) ones. And who better to show off said shade than Lucy Hale.

8 Sun-Kissed Color

A post shared by Jamie Chung (@jamiejchung) on
To achieve natural-looking sun-kissed highlights, start with a solid base before you — or your colorist — add in some very subtle variations of highlights, like Jamie Chung has here.

9 Strawberry Blondes

A post shared by Isla Fisher (@islafisher) on
Like the late sixties and early seventies, strawberry blonde hair color, like Isla Fisher's, is having a moment this season.

If you're already a redhead and want to go lighter, strawberry blonde with ribbony highlights is a stunning option. It gives you more of a sun-kissed effect, rather than having your color appear dull and flat. If you’re blonde and want to add a light red hint of color to your hair, ask your colorist to apply a light reddish-colored glaze over your strands. If you have darker hair, you’d first lighten it with a single process (permanent hair color that lifts the pigment out), and then add in highlights from there.
