Hair Removal At Home Made Easy!

By  Jill Russell, Beautylish

If there’s one thing we love, it’s a good DIY beauty treatment. And yet: if there’s one personal care to-do that’s trickiest to do at home, it’s waxing. That’s why we’re huge fans of Bliss, the brand known for translating its world-famous spa treatments into products that make at-home beauty upkeep a whole lot easier. One thing Bliss does particularly well? Hair removal! We’ve already tried (and love!) ‘Fuzz’ Off, their cream designed to eradicate facial hair, so we had to see if we could get similarly smooth results on the rest of the body with their Poetic Waxing Kit. While we tried out the product on arms, it works almost anywhere: arms, legs, upper lip, chin, cheeks, underarms, bikini line, and more. If you’re interested in trying it out, pick up the kit and follow along through each step. We also threw in some tips we learned from trial-and-error, and from the included instructions booklet. (Don’t proceed without reading it—there’s important safety in there!)

1:

Prep your wax

The wax comes in a special microwaveable cup. Pop the whole thing in the microwave for 30 seconds (don’t worry—if you don’t use it all, you can just let the remaining portion harden and set aside for future use). Remove (from the handle, so you don’t burn yourself) and stir with an included spatula. Repeat the 30-second mic-and-stir intervals about six times, until the wax has a honey-like consistency. If the wax is too thin, let it cool and thicken in the microwave before taking it out.

2:

Cleanse the skin

First, clean the area you want to wax using the included Super Skin Cleanser, which pleasantly smells of rose oil. Dab a bit on a cotton ball, smooth over skin. Then blot.

3:

Prep the skin

Next, massage a few drops of the kit’s Pre- and Post-Waxing Oil onto the skin. Blot away any excess.

4:

Check your wax

Test the temperature and consistency on your inner wrist. It should be spreadable and a little above room temperature, but not so hot it’s uncomfortable to the touch. If it’s too cool or thick, it might not adhere to the hair, so pop it back in the microwave for another 20–30 seconds. Stir, let it rest a few, and you should be good to go.

5:

Put it on

Smooth the wax onto skin, applying a little pressure so that you get a firm shape with edges you can easily peel back (there are no strips in this kit; the wax itself hardens and grips the hair). The layer should be about 1/8", or about as thick as a banana peel. Most often, you want to apply the wax with the direction of hair growth. (See body part–specific tips in the instructions for exceptions.)

6:

Take it off

This is where timing is everything! After letting the wax set for just a moment or two so it’s not too tacky, it’s ready to remove; but, if you wait too long, the wax might start to crack. Hold the skin taught, grab an edge, and quickly remove the wax against the direction of hair growth. If there’s any pain, apply some pressure immediately to the area with your hand. (Although there are “practically painless” claims floating around out there, our model said, “Yeah, of course it hurts. All waxing does,” while barely flinching.)

7:

Give skin some love

After you finish, reapply some Super Skin Cleanser to disinfect and help prevent ingrown hairs, and follow by massaging in a bit more of the Pre- and Post-Waxing Oil to soothe skin.

And you’re done! We found this pretty easy to use, and effective—hair-free, super smooth skin was the result. For legs, arms, and underarms, as well as the upper lip, this should be fairly straightforward and quick for almost anyone to do. Especially for touch-ups between spa visits! Going pro may always be the best option for trickier spots (bikini, brows), but if you’re more comfortable taking it all off in the comfort of your own home, this may be the kit for you.
