In
mythology, black pearls have been considered a symbol of prosperity and
wealth, while in metaphysics they're known for their purifying and
healing properties - so adding it to your skincare routine could really
do no harm.
We spoke to the brand ambassador for Glo Skin Beauty, Amanda von dem Hagen, who explained the origins of this gemstone and how it's being introduced into the beauty industry:
Where does the ingredient come from and how is it used within skin care products?
"Black
Pearls originated in and around the waters of French Polynesia and are
commonly referred to as Tahitian Pearls. They are created by a ‘Black
Lipped’ oyster called Pinctada Margaritifera and take 2 to 3 years to
form. Black Pearls are infused into skincare by being crushed to a
powder and combined with oils, balms or creams. One of the most common
skincare products containing Black Pearl powder are facial masks- an
effective treatment to intensely revitalise tired skin."
What are the benefits of including black pearl products into your beauty routine?
"The
benefits of pearl powder for promoting and maintaining skin's
youthfulness were discovered thousands of years ago, reports date its
use back to Ancient Chinese medicine and the Tang Dynasty, making this
truly one of the original multi-tasker skincare ingredients you can
find."

"Pearl powder is a natural source of Calcium
which has been ground into a finely milled powder from quality
freshwater pearls- it offers a number of incredible skin benefits, such
as: healing, firming, brightening and antioxidant protection. It can
also help promote cell renewal, enhance elasticity, detoxify skin and
protect against free radical damage, regulate skin discolouration and
smooth skin texture."
Why are pearls known to enhance skin's natural glow?
"By
inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, pearl powder slows the development of
melanin, which provides natural skin brightening. Its amino acids also
help strengthen skin which smooths occurring wrinkles and aids in skin’s
natural ability to hold on to and maintain water content. This not only
helps prevent dehydration, it also helps promote your skin’s natural,
healthy radiance."
So there you have it! We wonder what weird ingredients will take the spotlight next...
