Summer might be 42 days away (not that we're counting), but we're
already starting to plan out makeup looks for the sunny days ahead.
What's at the top of our list? Copper eye shadow. It's the perfect
neutral with a little something extra — the extra being shimmer, of
course — so it goes with everything. As celebrity makeup artist Mai
Quynh puts it, "Copper is a good summer shade because you can wear it
with bright colored clothes or summer whites."
[post_ads]We've lusted over the metallic hues since seeing it on the Fall 2017 runway at shows like Brandon Maxwell (seen above) and Christian Siriano,
as well as Instagram. Copper eye shadow is also making recent
appearances in new eye shadow palettes. We love the rusty hues in the Tarte Make Believe in Yourself Palette. And as PopSugar
pointed out, the highly anticipated Natasha Denona Sunset Eyeshadow
Palette launches on Friday, May 12. It contains 15 shades include
several variations of copper tones making for endless bronzed and
beautiful possibilities. The only catch is the palette is $129. Yikes.
As much as it's worth it for the super blendable shadows, not everyone
can afford to drop more than a Benjamin on makeup.
That's where Quynh comes in. We asked the MUA who has worked with Chloë Grace Moretz and Aubrey Plaza how to pull off the summer makeup trend at home for less. She knows copper eye shadow well. Just recently, Quynh created a coppery look for actress Brooklyn Sudano, and you'll want to add it to your summer mood board ASAP.
First of all, anyone can wear copper eye shadow. "It looks beautiful on any skin tone," Quynh tells Allure.
"There are different variations of brightness of copper, so finding the
right shade is easy for anyone." For deeper skin tones, she recommends a
brighter copper with more red or orange undertones. "If it's a more
subtle or lighter copper shade, then it will look great on fair skin,"
Quynh adds. "It won't be as striking or intense." Our go-to single
copper shadows are the Make Up For Ever Starlit Powder in Copper for something bold, while Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Singles in Wine is more subtle.
Her
favorite ways to use the metallic shade are simple. "I love applying
copper shadow along the bottom lashline as well as on the entire lid,"
Quynh explains. "Or you can just use it lightly on the center of the lid
as an accent color. It's more noticeable and striking if you don't use
too many black accents such as black eyeshadow or liner." For the rest
of your makeup, Quynh suggests keeping your lipstick and blush more
neutral "with warm and peachy undertones."
