Despite highlighters
taking over our beauty routines one shimmery shade at a time, there's
still a barrier to entry for many. For those with darker skin tones,
finding a highlighter that doesn't look ashy or chalky can be just as
difficult to find as the right sunscreen or foundation shade. Thanks to a brand-new beauty brand called Wvrthy, the search is about to be a lot
easier. Chelsie Worthy, its founder, makes highlighters specifically
for people of color. To make sure they are perfect for darker skin
tones, she made sure Wvrthy's highlighters didn't have a white base like
a lot of colored highlighters on the market. Instead, her highlighters
have a bronze or gold base.

When we say Wvrthy is brand-new, we aren't exaggerating — it just launched on May 29. Worthy started planning its big release at the start of the year. "I began creating the collection in February, wrote my business plan in March, and finalized the content on my website in April," she explains to Allure. "I have been in business for about three weeks." And in just three weeks, Wvrthy has gone totally viral for its intensely pigmented colorful and neutral shades of highlighter.
Worthy, a freelance makeup artist, wanted to create a destination where people of color can find an array of highlighter shades that would compliment their various skin tones. "Black beauty is being celebrated on an exponential level," she says, "and I was inspired to create Wvrthy in order to maintain a spotlight on that."
[post_ads]To do so, Worthy decided to make highlighters. "It’s important for people of color to have highlighters because the beauty industry needs to normalize catering to their needs," she explains. Worthy believes beauty brands have a tendency to gear their makeup towards light and medium skin tones. With that in mind, "If you’re someone with a rich dark complexion, options for a highlighter may still be incredibly limited for you," she says. "Our mission is to change all of that. Makeup is like art. [It's] a form of expression. They already possess the brush and canvas, we simply want to provide people of color with the proper medium."
For her first line of highlighters called the Stardust collection, Worthy drew inspiration from Greek mythology. Each of the 12 shades is named after a Greek god or goddess. All are colored powder pigments formulated with mica, iron oxides and titanium dioxides. "I made sure natural micas and metals were the main components because mineral makeup melts right into the skin," Worthy says. "When applied as a highlighter, it gives the appearance of being lit from within." We couldn't agree more.

When picking the shades in the line, Worthy was sure to keep in mind that there's a whole spectrum of complexions that applies to people of color. "I would describe the Stardust collection as an all-inclusive assortment of highlighters for people of color," she says. "There’s so many different complexions and undertones out there, and I did my best to include the majority of them, if not all." She started off by focusing on the most sought-after shades such as champagne, bronze, and lavender. then, she created other vibrant ones like turquoise, red, and pink. All have a "POC-friendly payoff," she adds. Worthy's favorite at the moment is Eros, a gorgeous yellow gold that "makes your cheeks look like they’ve been kissed with 14 karats," she says.

The best seller, however, is Aphrodite. It's a pinky coral that has a shimmery lavender shift.
You can shop all of Wvrthy's highlighters now on wvrthy.com for $17 each.
